2012 Maine Event. At speed we see Morneau Racing entry number 9304 Studebaker driven by Andre Morneau. He set the B/GALT (7 Liter / Gas Altered) record at 192.706 mph. Studebaker9034TShay (1).jpg

The following photo has me a little confused.

I don't think there were rule requiring side or rear gl*** in the NASCAR Modified or Sportsman cars but most ran them to reduce drag and the car also has Firestone dirt tires.

Maybe after it's days as a speedway car, it became a short track car, or maybe the dirt big track at Nazareth Pa 1 mile and a 1/8, the dirt miles at Langhorn Pa, Milwaukee, Syracuse the N.Y. State Fairgrounds?

  6. Yes, 1960 was the first year the NASCAR modifieds and Sportsman ran the speedway, in 1959 they the were still on the beach.

Even then the racers knew the coupes and coaches they raced Friday, and Saturday nights, also Sunday afternoon were not going to cut it aero wise at Daytona. If you notice the few coupes/coaches in the field has side gl*** or plexigl*** to help reduce drag.

I am thinking the second photo is latter after it's days as a speedway car were over. The paint is different in the second photo, it no longer says Gus Linder on the quarter panel, on the number has moved from the center of the door to the rear of the door/ quarter panel.

These cars lived many lives. Once they out live their lives as speedway cars they became short track cars.

NASCAR Grand National had an age cut off (3 or 5 years I can't remember) also the factories wanted their drivers in the newest models.

So they would sell a one or two year old car to the independents, after the car was no longer legal the independents would sell them to the Modified Sportsman drivers.

That's why there are so many 55/56 Ford the many of them are former Holman Moody factory cars, with different engines, Lincons, Pontiacs, Oldsmobile, Hilborn Fuel Injection, Mutiple carburetors (the winning car had a 6x2 set up) blowers etc..

I really prefer the post model over the hard top when it's a "speed" car, maybe because I know it's more structural sound, and so did everyone that built one, maybe just because it looks tougher.

Not known to most but the Neil Thompson Studebaker is probably the most famous. Back before rules changed for blown and unblown and Comp Coupes were only fuel I believe his Studebaker held every Bonneville record from AA to E and that was all of them. It was chopped with a 68 corvette nose and pretty close to stock wheel base. There was a Magazine article in the late 60’s or early 70’s showing a timing print out in excess of 300 mph.

Jack Rice, you are remembering the Simonson Studebaker. It was in an all gl*** garage on display. I believe it had set some records on the salt. I think that I have some pictures of it, but they are buried somewhere in the ba*****t.

That's a memory - F-97 was the Red Farmer car. I remember chasing some parts for it/him; the Dana 60 from a Studebaker pickup. Red was usually the Ford guy and Bobby was always a Chevy guy until late in his career when Penske paid him to drive an AMC.
