RIP Ken Schmidt... Mr. Bones has moved on, he was always good to me in the short time I've known him. He once offered me a ride in his coupe, as well as and shelter, for speed week, in Bonneville. Sadly, I couldn't take him up on the offer. He also gave me a chance to see my work in print along side several of the most amazingly talented hot rod artists.
In fact, something I only recently found out about the man is that he was an art teacher for some time. I understand Ken 'rattled a few bones' of the powers that be, here on the HAMB, likely, elsewhere as well however, I'm sure all will agree, as far as the traditional hot rod scene goes, Ken left a lasting mark...

When money is tight and every penny is saved for a cool looking car, but the family uses are the first choice, a 2 door 56 Chevy hardtop does not fit a family of 4. Two growing teenagers just does not cut it sitting in the back seat going to family functions. So, our friends did as much as possible doing small things to make theirs a little different from the rest.

In our case, we could no longer fit in the back seat of our dad’s 57 Buick Roadmaster, although there was a lot of room for most people. It was just too confining for my brother and me. So, my brother sold his 51 Oldsmobile sedan and bought a 58 Chevy Impala to ease the transition into our own fast sedan.

Our friend’s 56 Chevy became a mild custom with simple things making a start. The small affordable elements look different than what came from the factory dealer’s showroom. Take off the huge stock hubcaps, black paint on all 4 wheels, and replace them with small round center caps was the first step.

The advantage that 56 Chevy had over the 58 Impala was when the windows were rolled down. Now, those 4 door windows made the biggest, wide open, air cruising of any car. Sure, the 58 Impala had the windows rolled down and it, too made a wide open space. But, the 56 was just that much more open. No A/C on either of the sedans, so the natural A/C dependent on the flow of fresh air.

This 56 Chevy had a huge flow of fresh air anytime the 4 windows were rolled down. The girls and our moms did not like it as they had to wear scarves over the hair-do set ups to keep them calm looking, prior to any event. But, it does get hot in So Cal throughout the year, not just in the summer…

But, to be a little different as the years rolled on, we would have liked to have a custom 4 door Chevy pickup, like an El Camino, but yet, not an El Camino. A true custom car with suicide front doors, frenched headlights, and an modified rear panel and flowing skirts for the full custom look. It was in our late hours of “midnight talks” for what if situations along with the normal drag racing, hot rod topics…
Then, it morphed into today's custom car mode of drawing with some different ideas.

Is that a rear door from the 4 door sedan showing with a push button to open the door? Yup, now access to the rear floor bed was easily done from the front and not just from the rear tailgate. A custom station wagon could have been the start of this one, but it started with the family 4 door hardtop sedan.

To add to the brain scene, it would have been nice to see all 4 doors wide open and the tailgate down with show lights highlighting the custom touches, on the floor of the Long Beach Municipal Auditorium main floor show displays... perhaps some pinstripe scallops or flames... YES!!!

Happy Friday to all. Something a bit different this week.
A few years ago, my neighbor had a MEXICAN themed bar for a couple of years, he wanted me to do a piece of art for his bar. So I used some very cool, old school water slide decal's, to decorate this mirror I had fitted to this cool model A radiator shell. It made a great wall hanging.

I did a small favor for Greg Guise once and he etched my old 33 pickup on black granite. Greg hasn't been on the HAMB for 6 years but can be reached online. Just type in guiseart and you'll see his work. It's amazing!

 

Sad news, Ken has gone. Never had the chance to meet him, but I was lucky enough to chat with him in the past, on different cool projects for which he had trusted me.

There are unquestionably feelings of loss and remembrance in the Vintage Hotrod scene with the passing of a senior member of the Rolling Bones...Hamber Ken Schmidt has moved on to the big sky and joins so many others from here that have left us...may he rest in Hotrod Peace...
