Had one in my o/t '86 trans am. .030" over cast pistons, 9:1 compression, mild head porting, comp cams 280H cam kit, Weiand(sp?) Stealth intake and a Holley 570cfm 4bbl, shorty headders, aftermarket HEI dizzy. Ran mid 15s at 5000ft elevation in a 3600lb car with a T5.

I've always wanted to bore a 307 out to "4 inches, put splayed main caps and a steel 327 crank in it with some O/T vortec heads and dress it up as a crate engine in a street racer.

I ran them in the stock cars. Better than a 283 with the PCV system and other things. Generally they came out of wrecked Novas and Impalas, buy one for junk money, sell the leftovers and it was a "free" engine if we plunked an old engine into it.

I would switch things over from the old engine, intake, distributor and Chet Herbert cheater cam, always a solid lifter. Always screw-in studs for the rockers. Pushrods, rockers, straight out of the Car Quest parts store, nothing fancy outside of poly-locks.

I never understood 283 and 327 great engines but a 307 which is a combination of parts from both engines is a POS. A two barrel 283 or 327 weren't all that fast either.

The main reason the 307 was always a bridesmaid and never a bride was that there was never a factory performance version of it. There were always tales of the 270hp and 283hp 283, 350hp and 365hp 327, and the original LT1 350, but all of the 307s came through with a 2 bbl carburetor, small valves, low compression, and single exhzust.

I have a 307 in an elco--personally i really like it, its a totally stocker with 2 bbl. and auto. I've done a ton of research on improving one and came up with a little list of what will give you about 250 hp (stock 200 hp) or a little more for cheap money.
-416 heads off a 305, or a good set of 1.94 valve heads like vortec or even old humps. 2.02 valves are a no no.
-262 duration cam, can get from summit on the cheap, use comp cam specs.
-Ebrock performer manifold (cheapo at swap meets) and carb-about 5-600 cfm.
    -HEI ignition.
--mixed here, some say headers, but i'd go with 2 1/2" ram horn manifolds, knock offs are great.
A few more odds and ends and you're good to go. So how much $ depends on your shopping skills, new isn't necessarily better here.
Yeah, i've heard it all before too-swap that for a 350, boat anchor, etc.etc. I'm old school, came from a time when we tried to improve what we had--called "hot rodding".

    I have.
Loved it. It ran as well as any street 350.
Knowing what I know now, I would have ported the head, used bigger valves and a different cam. But hey, you live and learn.

I never hot rodded one, but I also never met a 307 I didn't like. As kids we simply could not blow em up. But that aside let's look at something. A 200HP stock 307 is 5 times the HP of the stock 4cyl banger. How do we think it would run in a Model A? Twice the power of the average dual exhaust flatty. Stock. And in closing, this being a zombie thread is perfect, the 307 just won't die. Irony?

  14. There is nothing wrong with a 307. I’d take a 307 any day over a 305. Just remember, take a 307 crank and a 350 block and instant large journal 327. Sure, the 307 crank is cast, but so what? I’ve seen a cast crank take some stupid abuse.

I'm with the pro 307 group... It really doesn't take much to turn them into a decent screamer... Don't dump a bunch of money into it, stay with the budget Hop Up tricks and you should be pleasently surprised. What ever you do keep the compression 9 or under so you can use 87 octane fuel. The higher compression, premium fuel deal and all the pain in the *** issues that come with it is no way worth it..

Ignition, use the stock single points distributor to trigger a Capacitive Discharge ignition box. This is hands down one of the best street ignitions going. I like the Vertex Z-6..

Back in the latter half of the 70s, a 60 over 307 with a forged 327 large journal truck crank was a hot setup on the dirt tracks here in upstate New York in the sportsman cl***. 317 cubic inches on a 320 cube limit. And the bore at 3.935, with a little bit of finagling would work with 2.02 intake valves. It was close! With the right cam, better torque for getting off the corners, and it would still rev almost as good as a 302. Which would get you into the next corner ahead of the 302 equipped cars. Legally!

Of course some people just ran 350s and hoped to not get teched...

Used a load of these in cars out of the shop here. Set up well they are a great little motor. I would not hesitate to use it at all. This one pulled 312 HP with great torque as an example.

Okay so what do y'all think of this, what if a guys got a 307 block laying around (main caps got robbed for 327 project). Also I've been looking for a crankshaft with casting number 3914672 but neither mortec.com or nastyZ28.com tells me what it's out of. and I think Hack missed one because I see a casting number 3951130 that is also a steel LG 327 crankshaft. https://www.speedmaster79.com/Chevy-350-Complete-4-Bolt-Splayed-Steel-Main-Caps-5-Caps

Jimmy Ray Berry ran a bad *** Chevy II with a .060 307, don't know what else was done to it, but he held the track record in his cl*** at Clay City with that setup for a long time.

Finally some love for the most outcast sbc ever. I almost fell for the 350 swap talk, that is, before i got the 307 running great and concluded a few simple parts would really liven it up.

The 307 doesn't get a lot of love but one has to remember that it is just a 283 stroked with a 327 Crank.
Something that a low bucks guy may have well put together in the mid/late 60's with junk yard parts.
Back in the late 80's I had a 307 out of a 72 Chevelle that I had bought and stuck a 350 that I had had in a couple of different cars in it for my wife to have a daily driver. The 307 sat in the corner until my son needed an engine for his 70 C10 and he and I went through the 307 with new rings and bearings and a late 80' Z28 cam that I picked up cam and numbered lifters in an egg carton for 25.00 at the Portland swapmeet. I dug out a pair of pretty decent 283 power pack heads and did a valve job on them and stuck the old 300 Hp 327 cast iron intake that I had on the 283 that was in my T bucket and then my 48. I stuck a swap meet holley 650 spread bore on it and that ****** ran pretty strong and made a bit of a name for it's self in short street races. It was an off the wall combination that we had around 250 bucks in 1987 dollars tied up in. Granny 4 speed and 3.73 Posi. The truck got 16 mpg on a road trip to Texas and back in 1989 pulling a stock trailer loaded with furniture on the way back.

I ran in a claimer cl*** and HOPED someone would claim it for the $800 bounty. Usually the engines were free, or close to that. The Chet Herbert cam was like $69, lifters another $30. The rest we moved parts from engine to engine, we were able to keep the clutch and carburetor in the deal.
