I am looking to replace the door latch/striker for my 56 Chevy truck. The oem parts are not that great in my opinion so has anyone upgraded to a better system? I looked at the Altman latch system which looks good but requires cutting into the door panel and probably redo of the upholstery. Suggestions comments welcome. Thanks
I expect that anything you find that is not OEM for that truck, will require some metal work to make it fit. Good luck. I still have the original style on my 59, been replaced a time or two...lubrication is important, to make them last, and most of us neglect it.
On my '54 3100, after I spent some time adjusting the plates, lubed it up well, and often, my doors will close and latch with one finger. Before I had to slam the doors at least twice to get them to latch. My experience has been very good with the original equipment, but I understand where you are coming from.
If you want some bear claw type latches, I can help you out. But you will have to do some cutting and fabrication work to install them. www.hotrodlatches.com
I used the Altman latches on my 56, my old striker plates were worn to the point of not holding and the repops were not good. Loved tje Altmans. Pretty straight-forward install.
