Pertronix with a generator - problems?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Mike Zenor, Sep 19, 2006.

  1. Okay, I've now heard twice that running a Pertronix with a generator/voltage regulator can cause problems, specifically that voltage spikes can fry the Pertronix. Is this an old wives tale or something I should genuinely be worried about?

Two months, 1K miles, knock on wood, runs great.

  7. Joe- I looked through the pertronix site and the instruction book for 12v negative ground Ignitor I, and the term "generator" doesn't even appear.

According to Marvin at Pertronix their Ignitor ignition conversions work perfectly with a generator with a voltage regulator. I had to leave a voicemail and get a call back, so I didn't get to talk to a live person... (my line put me to the front of the voicemails... I guess)

If you have any specific concerns, feel free to call Marvin at x1030

I personally never had a problem with that setup, but a few friends have.I used Pertonix once, and it was great with my generator.Probably not enough amperage. If you can,try an alternator on it and see if that works. If it does and you want to keep the generator, you can up the amperage on the generator.I have also heard some negatives about the Pertonix.Once again,I used it once and it was all good.

Im not sure what your running this on but here is a link to a site on flatheads, just scroll down to the ignition section and there is a series on runnin Pertronixs with generators. Hope it helps.
