Projects 1962 Biscayne Jr Stocker for the Street Build

Needed a break from my other project so I spent some time on the 62 today.

Did an old school mod to the upper control arm bushings. The key is to keep the suspension loose and free and use an adjustable shock to control compression and rebound. Ground off the serrations. Then using a lock nut and grease on the bolt, you don't cinch it down tight. This is only temporary as adjustable control arms will be added in the future.

Got the rear suspension reassembled. Progress!

 

^Chevrolet scored an absolute home run with this body style. Nothing extra, just the right stuff.

 

I just read this thread a little late but , I also had a 1962 Chevy experience, my brothers friend stopped over looking for him as he just purchased a new Chevy and he was working for G M at the time. ( I heard him come up the driveway and looked out the window) My brother wasn’t home. I was 12 years old and it was 1962, so you can imagine as thoughts were going through my head as I had been reading my brother’s Hot Rod magazines for years, including the little pages. I walked outside because I also knew him, as I knew all of my brothers friends, he walked me around the 1962 Impala and he then opened the hood and ( I had seen the badges on the front fender as I started to drool 409 dual quad also a 4 speed )He asked me if I wanted to go for a ride ( I just about wet myself as I am a Chevy fan back then and even now ). I didn’t hesitate I carefully sat in the passenger seat, and when he said put your seat belt on well you can guess what I was feeling especially at 12 years old. We slowly went down our side street onto the main road. He was driving conservative, we got passed the stop light and he looked in the rear view mirror and then stopped. He looked at me and grinned, he then brought the RPMs up and let her fly, power shifted into 2 nd and then into 3 rd and then into 4 th. My heart was fluttering. We then turned around and he took me back to my house. On the way back I was looking on the other lane and noticed the black marks on the road from the burn out and the 2 nd gear rubber . I was shaking when we got back to my house. He left and I rushed to my friends house and he said that I was full of it so I took him to show him the tire marks on the street. He then believed me. I still think of that ride to this day and know that was the beginning of the rest of my life and this thread brought back so many memories for me. I am still looking for a 1962 Chevy that will fit my budget. Thank for the memories. Ron Emerson

I experienced something similar with my uncle who stopped over one day with his new to him anniversary gold 62. 327, 4-speed, Edelbrock, Holley, headers, Thrush mufflers. It was a long time ago and I'll never forget it.

I've saved your build threads for inspiration and many of your suspension mods will be done on my car.

 

After a two month thrash on my 32 Plymouth to get it ready for the Cleveland Autorama, it's time for a break from that one. Decided to take the pile of parts I had and build a center section for the 62. The car is going to get a 12 bolt but I need something so I can move it around and the old rear end will be easier to sell as a unit. 4.11 Posi

Got a decent pattern for used gears and my old Snap-on IM 51 impact can still smash a crush sleeve.

The good news is the carrier is a 4 series so I didn't need the ring gear spacer

 

And it's back home.

 

Good choice on the 12 bolt, your old rear should fetch some good coin with the 4 series and 4.11s I put a 12 bolt in my Vette.

I got the rear brakes and shocks hung today. I received a load of parts with the car and the lightly used brake shoes were in the pile. I like old stuff versus what they sell today (I mean, who paints reman brake shoes these days?) so I cleaned em up and used them. Lakewood Drag Shocks from Summit have the vintage look and as a bonus, it says they are "made in the USA" on the box.

don't the ball joint spacers raise it without taller springs?

The ball joint spacers I am aware of don't raise the car. They just add front end travel. They are also not NHRA legal and the car may see some racing action in the future.

 

Well...It's been a summer of working on the off topic race car, property upgrades and maintenance, and family commitments. Then I saw the post about organizing the garage, so I've been creating a swap meet pile and throwing shit out.
As part of my cleaning/organizing, I have been throwing some parts on it here and there. I cut the brackets for the twelve bolt off a donor rear end so I could pitch it, and I'm putting the engine together so the pile of parts is slowly becoming an engine.
When I get some time, I'll post pics of the engine build progress.

 

It’s about time you were showing it some love! You might want to consider adding an extra upper control arm while you are at it. I’ve seen a few of the uppers rip out of the frame and or break brackets.
