Got a customer's truck here which is a 41 Ford and it's got some ugly street rod tail lights in the roll pan that were definitely getting rid of and I've got a set of 40 Deluxe tail lights. I've seen pictures of this and it looks pretty good and the customer wants it done. Was going to see if anybody here had done this and if they could take any measurements as far as how far up the fender they cut. Here's a couple of pictures, thanks
I put 50 merc tail lights in the fenders of my 56 f 100.What I did was make a sheet metal pattern of the back of the housing and played with that to see if it would seat flat of the fender.Unfortionally the contours wouldn't match up and I had to french the taillights onto the fenders.
I did this within the last two years. You can take the easy route and buy LED 40 ford taillights and drill a couple of mounting holes and you are done. I don't like the LED lights so I used the originals. Someone had started to install them in one fender when I purcahsed the truck. Without any backing or support the lens broke when they attempted to bolt it down. Learning from that I built steel reinforcements using the gaskets as patterns. Cut them out with a plasma torch and cleaned them up by hand Welded in, lower view top view I placed mine so the top of the light is about half way through the gas filler. Doing it this way is time consuming but the light attaches properly and has a lot of support.
Mine has them but I didn't do it. It was done in the early 70s, no backing but I did get a little creative with the gaskets to take up some of the small gaps.
Nice, that looks about where I set these ones up at. I made the backing plates to weld in so that they can bolt to that but I need to weld them in and these ****ers didn't come with gasket so I've got to order those. Got to get rid of those ****py flesh Mount street rod ones in the roll pan also , I'm done for the day I'll get back on it Monday probably
Forty Ford taillights are very neat looking, but they do not throw good light on a sunny hot rod day run.
I’ve noticed that any tail/brake light that isn’t vertical seems to lose it’s effectiveness. Along with bulbs that aren’t particularly bright, on a sunny day you often can’t even see the brake light when it comes on.
I got the backing plate mounts welded in and then the lights in. The lights seem to be two different brands or something as the me tal surrounds are different shapes and one fits much nicer than the other
Yep that one looks good. I'm waiting on another set of Lights as one of these bezels is completely different than the other and they're missing the gaskets.
