Projects Bought a Mercury on purpose

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by anthony myrick, Feb 4, 2023.

  1. Picked up this 4 row copper from a guy that wanted a polished aluminum one for his 55.
New build he bought and thought the radiator needed replaced cause it wasn’t pretty.
    It’s a new radiator. I think I gave the guy $150.
I’m good with an “ugly” radiator

A little black paint and it’ll be purty again.

  3. Just a FYI. The late 51 drive shaft is shorter than the 49 early 51
Finally found my 50 drive shaft I saved decades ago.
We saved a trip to the drive shaft shop getting a longer one made

Is there room to fab a small stainless heat shield between them?

  6. Taking care of suspension issues. King pins were shot.
I thought I’d check the parts car I have before I order some. They passed the tire wiggle test so I removed em. 68F5EB54-AD2A-4A34-8586-9A4A4382A70C.jpeg
King pins have been replaced and feel great.
    Cleaned up nice

  8. Rounding up clutch pieces. looked up a few sbc to flathead threads. Got the instructions from speedway. Instructions say use the 10 inch borg and beck pressure plate.
I’ve got 2. We have a local rebuilder. These are B&B 1319 and 988. Also had the appropriate pilot bushing and a couple 3 bolt starters in my stack of junk. 96EAC584-DD53-4916-AC34-5D2A58DD795F.jpeg E2882906-B7AF-4363-9D14-33347A1AA0CC.jpeg
Ive got a 168 tooth FW but not drilled for a 10 inch setup. Just kinda curious why an 11 inch set up wouldn’t work since flatheads also had em.
Not that big a deal to drill the FW but I might try to locate a 55 chevy one that had the 10inch clutch. The 55 Chevy FW casting number should be 3703870

  9. Some Chevy truck flywheels take both clutch covers. I run an 11 inch in my car, use a '55 Chevy bellhousing and truck starter.

    Hey, Anthony;
I'd guess that clutch dia would depend on the clutchcan/bellhousing depth & diameter you are using, that'll allow a given PP to fit. Since the stamped steel one was hard to find, didn't most ford flattie v8s use the smaller 10", so speedway, jcwhitney, et-al, just go w/the 10" version cause it'll fit most combos w/o trouble? (Not suggesting it'll be the best solution, or work the best). Would think if the dry-test-fitting has enough room, it should work ok. Sold all my old ford v8 flattie books, even the old jcwhitney catalogs are long gone, so I'm guessing from memory.

  11. I guess the plan is to get one of the 10 inch pressure plates rebuilt. Purchase a disc. The trans I’m using has the larger input. 1 3/8.
The depth of the speed gems adapter would be the only issue fitting the larger set up.
No reason to waste time trying to make an 11 inch set up work. I’m not racing or towing. Just cruising.
So the only thing to get handled will be either finding a 55/56 gm flywheel with the 10 inch clutch or drill the one I have.
We ain’t skeered drilling new holes

  12. Students started assembling the rear brakes. The brake hold down pins were wrong. Correct ones will be here tomorrow along with parking brake spreader bar springs
Parking brake cables have been installed. Adjusters cleaned and oiled.

    new seals installed.
Got the front suspension cleaned up ready for some paint. We ain’t overthinking this one.
All of it was in great shape except the king pins.

Many Hands make light work of a tedious job . Good of You to be teaching the Students how to make repairs and how to rebuild things . These skills will help them all through Their lives .

  14. Those casting lines... triggering my OCD...

  15. Those students must be pumped, I get a lot of satisfaction from your progress and I’m just watching from the sidelines.

  16. This one might be a bit more shiny than what Anthony would drive, but I will post it up for the kids- not my car, but you guessed it- I’d drive it. 62B67074-E0A5-4255-9304-841FD4C42124.jpeg

  24. Dumb 283 question.
I’ve got a couple 283s. One has this small “dampener”
    IMG_1482.jpeg
    the other has this one

I need to get the short pump lower pulley.
What’s the difference between these two set ups and pulleys.
I’ve got the timing cover that matches both.

  26. We have a great welding instructor.
Loves to do custom stuff as well. He’s about to start on a 50 ford business coupe.
The young man welding is about to graduate and go to work.
