I got “the well” in our Bug. Same effect except that horsehair loop carpet was seriously itchy. I fell asleep back there many nights on the way home.

I never had a problem with the horse hair since I'd have a blanket to lie on. I never forgot the smell though. It seems a lot of German made cars had the same smell. I never knew the reason for the peculiar smell until I got my first Mercedes. It had the same smell as the Bug I remembered. Then I was told it was from the horse hair that was used in the cushions.
