Would you run REALLY OLD bias ply tires?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Flipper, Apr 23, 2008.

  1. I bought a 66 ford f600 in november of 1972. We still have it and 3 of the tires that are on it were on it when i bought the truck. It has 8.25x20 tires. Radials wont last as long as bias plys. If you dont use then every day a bias will out last a radial. Go look at a junk tire pile You will find lots of radials that have deep tread. Most of the bias will be worn slick. I am of the opinion that a trailer will pull better with bias ply on it. If you are not going to be driving at high speeds i would use them.:cool:OldWolf

Another thing to remember when storing tires, is to keep them in a cool place. I had a set of new tires that I had stored in my attic for a few years. Very stupid! One blew out within 100 miles on its first road trip!

I wouldn't run any tire thats more than a few years old, but then I like to drive at normal highway speeds.

I guess it's time to replace these Denman Super Safety's 4 ply bias, I run 50 -55 on these every weekend. Just looked for and found on inside wall J447458 No DOT anything. I think these are pretty old? My spare is a Firestone Gum Dipped, never been on the road, no idea how old it is.

Bought a 31 Model A last year that was a older restoration. It apparently set for a long time in the garage without many miles put on it. Tires look like new from a few feet away and the thread shows no wear. The problem is the sidewall on all the tires has cracked. I put about ten miles around town on it and now it's in the shop for a complete makeover. New droppped axle, reverse eye springs in front and back and hydraulic brakes. And new tires and 16" wires. At the top of this page is a reference to 8.25-20’s.

    My story to retell;).
My Dad had a ‘46 Chevy 1.5 ton truck. Built a ramp bed out (minimum) 1/4 inch steel. He used to to haul his D4 and home built dozer blade. This was in the early/mid 70’s. He towed it out of a barn with orange/yellow plates on it with a sticker from the late ‘50’s.
    Never had a tire issue.
In the mid/late 70’s he put the bed on a ‘54 Ford 2.5 ton, this one he drug out of a field somewhere and had been sitting (1/2 hood down) for who knows how long but the engine was stuck. It too had 8.25 -20’s on it. Hauled the D4/dozer for 3/4 years with it. Never a tire issue.
Now those tires were maybe 8 ply? I’d ***ume. But all said I think if he was alive now he wouldn’t do it again.
Me? I’d only use old tires for rollers but I’m a ***********.
And hey, “what’s old is new again” ;)

So there I was, trapped in a box canyon with nothing to fight off the Apaches, except a pair of 600-16's and a stick of beef jerky......:p

Had a really good friend with a absolutely beautiful 68 camaro, totally restored. I even did the front end work on it for him.

He put a set of repro redline tires on it and just drove it occasionally. Fast forward about 5 yrs, the tires at this point were 7 or 8 yrs old as he bought them new at the beginning of the build.

So as he had done many times, weekend car show, loads up his kids, drives 40 miles to show, heads home. On the way home at 65 a rear tire let's go, the rear-end swings out, rim grabs the shoulder. He tries to correct but the rim over the shoulder doesn't let go, the car flips 7 or 8 times, kills his young teen daughter, breaks the neck of his late teen son, that was 24 or so yrs ago. Since that time he has devoted his life to taking care of his son who is lifeless from the neck down.

He said several people had told him he needed to change tires but the looked great and everyday he said he never gets up or goes to bed without thinking he should have listened.

He said the only fortunate thing that happened is he didn't end up hitting the car beside him that had an entire family in it or the car in front of him or the truck behind him....

So I say if a tire is more than 5 yrs old, especially one that has spent most of its life sitting instead of being driven, change it. Not one of my family members or anyone else's is worth a tire just from being a tight dumb***.
