Got one of my 62 Safari wagons home. The parts car needed tires to hole air so it couldn’t come yet. The good car is missing the window crank to roll down the tailgate window. Which is apparently needed to be able to lower it and open the tailgate. Lowering it with pliers is tedious and likely to damage something eventually. Surely one of these exists somewhere. I have not have any luck searching things like Safari Tailgate crank. So what would I call this to find one? I might reach out to Franks Pontiac Parts. I’m told the parts car has an electric tailgate so it might not be compatible. And I would like to Rob as little as possible from that car since it’s pretty good itself. It does have a part there but it just looks like a chrome trim piece. Oh and some jerk left some Jurassic period masking tape on the stainless when they roller painted the roof. Now it’s brittle and hell and won’t come off easily. Any tricks there? I have one of those little magic eraser wheels for a drill. I might try that.
Yes on the eraser, it should work well, and the little wire wheels with plastic wire (Einstein I aint) work good on old tape also. Be prepared to use a little acetone for the residue also.
Soak the tape in lacquer thinner, it will come off easily then. Are you sure there isn't a switch on or under the dash for the tailgate window?
I am not sure. I got the car at about 7pm local so I know next to nothing. But I will investigate. I have a PHS on the car and I didn’t notice anything about an electric tailgate.
the piece in the hole in the tailgate looks like it's for cranking the window, not for switching an electric switch.
I don't remember if you posted which exact model you have but according to the factory brochure, an electric window was standard on 9 passenger wagons and optional on 6 passenger wagons. For the tape, try some 3M general purpose adhesive cleaner, it should be available at most auto parts stores. https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/p/d/b40070712/
First that tape deal would benefit a soak and wait a day, with WD40. One thing that stuff can do is defeat adhesive. Finding the piece for the gate I don't know, but if you know of a yard with ancient cars I am gonna guess that other GM models would use similar pieces. Also gettiing it up and down would be easier once you remove the inside panel opening and lube the track.
it is a crank. I just used it with pliers. My parts car has an electric tailgate. So it likely does me no good. Unless I switch gates, which I might do. but I would like to locate a replacement crank assembly. I’ve found one or two NOS pieces. But I would prefer to buy an assembly and not pay NOS prices. and this one is a 6 passenger. The parts car is 9 but the 3rd row was unfortunately sold before I got it.
So one of my problems here is I don’t really know what a full assembly looks like. I found this on FB marketplace for a Chevy. Which will do in a pinch if he will ship to me. I would need a new lock which are available reasonably priced on eBay. But is it missing something on the back that would interface with the spinning yoke in the tailgate from my original post?
3/8” Speed wrench and a socket with cut slots and a pop in electrical hole cover until you get the parts..
That is an excellent idea. I have not had good luck with finding a Catalina one whole. But I did find several salvage chevy wagons today on car-part.com (I love that site) I emailed them and am waiting for replies. Out of the three I feel like I stand a good chance of at least one getting back to me. The one on facebook was one of the "I only take checks" crowd. 50/50 its a fake account. So while I may get desperate and gamble, I think I have some other options first. Still having trouble finding a glass company that can get a windshield. I can get them off jegs or other sites but I get killed in shipping.
I think the part you are looking for was called a "clutch" for the t/gate window regulator. https://www.southeastchevyparts.com...dow-regulator-crank-handle-clutch-used_p_4618 I'd guess it was common for several years of GM makes and models but can't say for sure that this one is correct for your specific application.
Yeah I saw that too. Im not sure if that is needed for the 62 or not. Like I said I am yet to see a 100% complete assembly yet. Or if I have I don't know for sure that I did. Thats why my preference is for one of these salvage yards to just pull the whole thing off for me so I know I am getting everything I need in one shot. Then later if I can buy the correct Pontiac cap if I want.
