Slightly O/T what cleaner to use in ultrasonic tank?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Fox Valley Hot Rods, Sep 19, 2006.

  1. I just got an ultrasonic parts cleaner (thanks Ken) and want peoples input as to what works best in it. I've looked on-line and found some specialty products, but figured the HAMB guys would have suggestions of there own.

    It's a large tank (22 gallons) and I'm looking for the best de-greasing, de-grimming solution. :D

    What's everyone else using???

Personally, I'd use a "Simple Green" solution. Not flammable, even cuts through synthetic lubricants.
I'll admit that I haven't tried it in an ultrasonic cleaner, but I think it should work ok. (I am looking for a cleaner at this time, though.)

Nice size, let me know if you want to sell it.
Simple Green, cheaper than most other quality cleaners, non flammable and won't hurt aluminum or brass unless you leave it in there way too long.

  5. Any other suggestions???

I was thinking about mineral spirits or simple green at this point. Anyone have pros' & con's of either?

I've dealt with a bunch of that stuff at work, and all an ultrasonic cleaner is, is a low foaming soap. Try "alconox", it's widely available and is a good general purpose cleaner. There are a variety of citrus based cleaners which are effective as degreasers, and metal brighteners. Tips- use the soaps in low concentrations, heat is your friend, don't put items on the tank floor, and let the water do your work.

Consider some small pyrex beakers, like 3" across, you can devise a way to trap them loosely while they float on the surface. Put water in the tank, and clean small parts with whatever solutions you want, the waves will transfer into the beaker's liquid. EZ cleanup without having to dispose of 22 gal.

Good luck, that's a great investment.

    another vote for simple green.

i just cleaned a carburetor yesterday in an untrasonic tank with simple green, damn stuff worked better than the weak assed car cleaner you can get now. best part is it's not too expensive, and available anywhere.

  8. Just out of curiosity, does the simple green have any effect on rust? Just wondering.....
