Hello all wanting to see if anyone has experience swapping out a Muncie 3 speed with an automatic? I'm cramped for space so looking for something similar in size if anyone has done this swap before.
Would help to know what car it is in, and what engine it goes behind. Assuming looking at a GM automatic, my suggestion would be to measure the room available and check out the GM automatic dimension chart that is on-line from many sources.
The TH350 is pretty close in size to a Muncie 3 speed. Same length, mount location, and driveshaft spline, too. You'll need a different shifter, a transmission cooler, a kickdown cable, etc. Like he said, we can't see what you can see.
its going into the roaster you see in my avatar. has a hemi but doesn't matter would need an adapter. looking for similar size as i have no room to go bigger
The TH200 is probably the smallest, but they're hard to find. The 200-4R is significantly larger, the "guts" extend back a lot further. Pretty hard to see your floor from here....
turns out they're a strong transmission, IF you spend some dough fixing it up. Ask the class drag racers...
Just wondering why you want to go with an automatic? Seems a stick in that little roadster would be fun. Lippy
I did that swap on my 27 roaster. An air cooled powerglide out of a chevy 2 nova. No trans lines, same mount. Just swap the shifter.
If it's getting stuck the linkage needs adjustment or the Trans is going Bad. Could just be a simple fix. An Automatic is no smaller in diameter and if the floor is already this tight you won't gain anything. But you'll lose the ability to row the gears. just my 2c from in the dark. PS - Automatics are for Customs. You ROWdster through the gears.......
That's cute if you have room for a clutch pedal without getting your feet hung up or if your left knee is still able to work a clutch in traffic. My 77 flatbed has a 4 speed and the clutch in that is all my knee wants to handle. I've got a 5 speed for my 48 and am seriously pondering going turbo 350 instead. My 76 year old knee doesn't like clutch pedals like my 40 year old knee did.
Well, I can't help it if your a Quitter..... ;-) Trust me I understand completely and I am only 50. But the point still stands, if it's getting hung up it's a clearance, linkage problem, or worn out parts not inability.
I think some may have missed the OPs additional info. He stated his wife and daughter also want to drive the car and both prefer an automatic. I think (could be wrong) he thought maybe an Auto would take up more room than his 3speed, hence he mentioned size/fit. Of my 3 daughters I have one that has no want to learn to shift gears. Another is repulsed by automatics.
What's it take...........1/2 of an afternoon to get comfortable driving with a manual trans.? IF....(big IF!!) my wife ever had a brain-cramp and 'wanted' to drive my M-word hot rod ... she could...... When she got comfortable (again) with a manual trans. Sorta-like........" I'll gladly smoke one of your cigarettes...if you go buy a menthol.." 6sally6.........(just stirring the pot fellas)
If someone doesn't want to learn, there aren't enough hours in a lifetime to teach them. My wife wants nothing to do with a manual trans. It only cost me one trans before I took the hint. On the other hand, it only took one extra hour of drivers ed and my daughter had it down pat. Her first car was an S10 Blazer, 5spd. The OP is probably OK in the bell housing area. The trans tunnel will probably have to be enlarged some, especially if his Muncie is a 318, non synchro first gear. Getting rid of one pedal will buy him a little more foot room.
