Hi Guys, wondering if GM made a ramshorn type exhaust manifold for the drivers side that has a rear discharge AND the generater mount boss on the front. I'm putting a 59 283 in my survivor 39 Deluxe coupe and the center dump rams horn falls right into the steering box. Thanks,Bob
That E-Bay photo that Jonny Gee posted up is one I have used in 40 Ford SBC combo and worked. Know that there are a couple versions of it and that one is the later version. It's thicker and fatter than the first run of them. There is also a late one with air fitting holes in it for early smog motors. The early one I like is common to cracks due to the fuel changes of the time. I'm actually running one in my Avitar for steering clearance issues with the strait drop manifold. They are out there. I have a few on the shelf myself but don't think I have any first run ones left. I have also seen the Right side used on the Left letting the pipe go forward and wrap back around the steering gear. Whatever it takes ya know.
On those 67 C10 truck manifolds from eb** I posted earlier. You’ll need the correct brackets to match that manifold. So here’s the manifolds without the link and also a pic of what brackets are needed/look like.
Thanks guys but i'm looking for one with the early style generator mount on the front, not the later style Alt mount as pictured. Also, i'll take everyones word that they clear the steering box but it sure dosen't look like it will clear mine.I am running the early hurst front mount and bolted to the orig.39 trans and there isn't much room down there !
I'm ***uming that you are looking for this 58 bracket with the turn back outlet. I think you can find the one without any bracket new from Dorman pretty reasonable. That and the tradiditional bolt to the small block generator bracket would have you in business. I have used the one that normally gets used with headers to mount a generator or alternator on a manifold with no bracket before. Like this, a mix and match of parts to make things work.
No can do. That’s why I showed the other bracket. Unless, you can find a set of hard to hind 62-67 Chevy II units.
Look at the '58 to '62 manifolds too. IIRC they were close to the C10 pieces. The Nova ones are like hen's teeth.
For angled dumb you’d have to go 65-68 Impala but those still do not have alternator mount like OP wants. 2 options, get later style brackets or cough up the money. I found a minimum of 3 sets right off on eb** without ever scrolling down the first page.
Johnny You are correct, the Chevy II exhaust manifolds have gone off the chart in price. Most people would not even notice those thin mounting flanges but that is the quickest way to tell them apart from the other manifolds and I'd bet in a pile of a hundred sets you wouldn't find one, that's why I don't bother suggesting them anymore. By the way, there was no Chevy II specific L79 manifold.
I run either a '65 or '68 manifold on my driver side. I have had the sets since around 1978. I picked up a 45 degree Dorman truck unit for the p***enger side on eBay, ground off all the ugly nubs and writing. I had to plug the EGR holes.
I am pretty sure that GM never produced a "block hugger" sbc exhaust manifold. If you are dealing with the typical Vega or similar steering box location there is not a lot of options keeping the exhaust inside the frame rails. There are several options for tubular block huggers and this one is the only ram style cast one I've seen https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Tru-Ram-SBC-Exhaust-Manifolds-Polished-Stainless,34364.html
^^^^ Arc weld w/nickle rod, right? I did read something about a MiG weld on cast iron with some 'wire trickery', can't recall where.
Why not use 55 56 265 manifolds? I used them the first go around on my 39 Tudor and they worked great. They have the gen mount on them and clear the steering great. If you can’t locate any let me know. I have at least 2 sets and one driver side single as that’s the one that counts the most.
Those manifolds drop out between #1 and #3 exhaust port, right on top of the side mount motor mount. The Vega steering box, if used is just below that.
The R/H truck manifold aims forward and the the pipe can be snaked around the box. Would need to use a bracket like MR48 posted earlier to hang a generator mount.
I have the same exhaust setup RichB shows above on my 40 coupe with the same steering. Exhaust goes down and around the steering box. Works perfect.
Here is how it routed on my 39 with 55 exhaust manifolds. I used a hurst front mount but it can clear a side mount, if used with the biscuit type side mounts shown above.
I have a set with the rearward/forward if you like, for free, was going that way as well for starters. No bracket for generator though. But the shipping you know…
