Want to remove the chrome on an air cleaner. I want to go another route on it’s finish.Any ideas how to remove chrome without ruining the metal under it?

It's usually striped in a chrome shop. It can be removed with abrasives but chrome is HARD

Chromium is super hard. You'd probably do pretty good by sandblasting the air cleaner. It'll take the chrome off in the areas where it's rusted and peeling already. And it'll give the remaining chrome good enough tooth for primer and paint to stick to.
