Is there a company out there that remakes old looking vin tags? I need one made for a 41 buick. Was looking to sell the car and the state it would go to is pretty picky on VIN tags. So I was going to see if there was anyone out there to make a tag thats 1" x 2.5 with the Vin off the tittle I have.

  2. Is that legal?

Technically I don't think so. Even though you have a title I believe you have to go to the state and have them put on a new tag.

not sure? I have the title. From what I have learned some states do vehicle inspection. We don't in Wisconsin. I don't think I ever had a model A I bought or sold where the block matched the title. I remember what the old one looked like. It was anything special. It would be easier if I could just find the tag and rivet it back on. So just looking at options.

Seems like that would be the place to start.

  7. I feel sure it would depend on where you have the vehicle registered. Some states are much more picky about that sort of thing than others.

  8. Use to be a guy on ebay who made them up.He worked out of Canada since its illegal to do in the US. Seems like just last week we did a thread where a guy with VIN tag problems sold a truck out of state, and it had inspection problems with the new owner/ state. You can "over look" a lot of stuff if the car never leaves its state.Once in a inspection state its all by the book.

So if the V.I.N plate is gone chances are someone has used it to title another car. So does your title match that number which may already be in use ? or do you just have a random title ?

Look on the frame around by the steering box. There should be numbers stamped on there that should match your title. If so, you can probably get by without the tag on the body. If you find the numbers on the frame and they don't match the ones on your title you do not have a title to that car. Unless it was titled by the engine number, in which case if the engine has been changed you still don't have a title for that car.

I had a matching tag and title. When I was 20 years of old and knew everything I took it for while rebuilding this car during restoration. 22 years later...I learned I never threw the tag back on. I might have it though still. I just need to find it.

I’m pretty sure the one in my 57 has been replaced. It looks way to nice to be original.

Marti Autoworks sells replacements. Could be Fords only but there has to be someone else in business who makes them for other manufacturers.

Quick edit. Looks like he wants your original tag, so maybe there is a legal thing to follow.

If an original tag or replacement like the company listed above for FOMOCO and they are done the exact same way whether embossing or engraving the key will be how it’s attached and if the the person doing the registration know how it was done. On my own everything matches including frame numbers and at the time engines were not in the number.
A pop rivet is a dead giveaway that something is not correct. Getting the correct attaching device is the key…

There you go, a straightforward and totally legitimate solution. Go figure! So much better to start on the proper path rather than default to the jailhouse lawyers for advice on questionable work-arounds.

  17. People confuse serial numbers and V.I.N.s.

V.I.N.s did not start until 1981, before that cars only had serial numbers which gave only vague information, V8 or 6 cylinder engine, automatic or manual transmission and could be any number of digits or any order the manufacturer desired.

V.I.Ns are 17 with very specific information in a specific order as regulated by the Federal government, engine type and size, transmission type with number of speeds, etc…

You are assuming that this car always or ever had a title!

New York wasn’t a title state unit 1973, in fact my father didn’t have a title for the 1972 Ford Ranger he bought new until 1980 when he and my mom moved to South Carolina.

New York still doesn’t issue titles for pre 1973 cars, I don’t have a title for my 53 Chevy.
Here when you register a pre 73 car from a title state, the title is surrendered and you are only given a vehicle registration.
