My most irritating annoyance is squeaks! And Sat. morning headed to a local car show I hit a bump in my '39 Chev and heard the squeak! Went ahead to the show, and Sunday I went out to find it. It was coming from the right rear corner, and I could put my knee in the trunk on that side and push down hard to make it squeak, but darned if I could tell where it came from? Metal to metal sound, and I guessed maybe body mounts since springs, and all the suspension I did new less than 2 years ago.
So I jacked the car up on stands, and loosened all the rear body bolts about halfway up both sides. One at a time I removed a bolt and slid in urethan shims II cut with a 3/8" hole drilled to slip the bolts through. After 3 hours I let it down and checked again, and the same damn squeak still!
Back to the trunk and pushed down to hear the same squeak, and this time I began spraying some penetrant into places I thought might be the cause. Last place I tried was the spot welded joint where trunk floor meets the inner fender panel at 90 degrees. Sprayed along the joint, and suddenly the squeak stopped!
I tried a thin screwdriver, and a putty knife in the joint to see if any spot welds had broken, but all was tight and solid. No idea what caused it, nor why it stopped spraying the joint. Now I'm planning to clean it well and use seam sealer along the joint in hopes that stops it from ever returning.

Oh, and I took the left rear tire off of my car, and took it to the tire place to get a new valve stem put in it. After 30 minutes of trying to break the bead, I threw it in the truck and headed to the top of the hill. He broke the tire down, replaced the stem, balanced the tire, and told me $10! I reach him $20 and said lunch is on me. Then on the way home I realized that it's damn hard to eat lunch for $10 these days!

Any lunch you can buy for $10 these days is probably a fast-food grease burger and at my age I'm just pretty much over that.

I love it when a plan comes together.

Have you tried a vinegar/baking soda paste? Rub it on until the area comes clean, rinse and wipe dry with a clean cloth. Another option is SimiChrome. Used to use it for blued exhaust pipes on my motorcycles.

  11. I won't lie, I was sweating it a bit, at the last minute I measured from the body down with a 1 3/4 tube and it was a little different from measuring from filler tube up.
I had used that little 5 inch square and it showed the angles were pretty much the same, the smaller footprint of the tube showed they weren't so I moved it a half inch up.
That's where the doubt creeps in lol

After being layed off due to Covid no more machine shop to walk into. So what do you do when you need a few .000’s off? Get creative. Only need 4” so don’t be thinking I’m doing the whole 36”. Just mock up to see if I can spin some stock. 23D6CB62-17E8-4DC1-96E1-8CEF8A868FD7.png

  15. This was my jig to hand file a straight line, to clean up the fins on a scoop, creativity is only limited by the imagination.

I've been through that here, luckily a place called Camargo transmissions keeps a stock of redi-sleeves on the shelf.
