Mopar had a cap with a hose nipple so you could take it to the air cleaner.
Maybe someone here knows a specific appliation.
*Guess the flatty your '40 came with has given way to an OHV...

Let's see the valve cover's. That would help determine if they are baffled or not. Try to mimic the factory set-up as much as possible.

It would help to know what engine you are talking about.

My Chevy 350 would get oil in the vent/breather. Replacing the PCV valve fixed the problem. You could shake the valve and hear a rattling noise, but turn it over and back again and the ball would stick in place.
I hope this could work for you. Good luck.

My engine is similar as above, PCV on the left VC, and a hose from the air cleaner to the right side VC.

When a PCV system is plumbed correctly the air drawn in from the “vented” side is connect to the air cleaner on the inside of the filter.

If you have oil around your vent the system is not able to keep up with your engines “blow by”. The valve may be restricted with debris.

Is the engine tired? Does it need rings or valve seals? If you disconnect the PCV and remove the breather from the valve cover, does lots of blow by come out? If so you have engine problems, not PCV problems.

  14. '62 had a road draft tube as I recall. simplest setup if to run your PCV valve in the road draft hole. It should have a baffle in the lifter galley under the intake. if it does not Mr Gasket makes a baffled grommet for the PCV that works perfect.

You have another option, use a '66 Corvette filler neck if you are using a vintage intake. It has a provision for the PCV in the filler neck and you run an inline PCV. Then breathers on both rocker covers.

If you are actually getting blow by (get your engine up to temp and remove a breather if smoke comes out that's blow by) you probably have other problems aside from PCV. A way around that is thicker oil, or add Caseite Motor honey. A friend and me had a '65 Impala a 327 car back in the very early '70s, it was horrendous, the motor was wore slap out. We had a 30 gallon barrel of gear lube and that is what we used. Well until the engine finally gave it up and we had to build a new one. :D

I have seen some engines carbon up the pcv nipple, restricting the air flow.

If it sat for 24 years and you have not put many miles on it, I would run it for a while and maybe the rings will unstick and the blowby will go away. It still may need valve seals, as after 24 years they may be brittle.

yep that’s what i was thinking. also valve covers are not baffled so i’m guessing sucking oil a little. won’t cause the blow by but just another observation changed oil and put some 20w50 val in here.
