There were a lot of great drivers at Riverside in Agawam, Mass. & the North East in the mid 60's but my favorite driver & car was the purple 888 driven by Dan Galullo.

Charland also drove the purple 888 but it never preformed as well as the white car.

A couple of my grandpa's pics, not sure which or if both were his cars. Grammy is in the driver's seat in #21 and grandpa's by the windshield.

    Hello,

When we went to the 1960 Bakersfield Smokers March Meet #2, we saw all kinds of race cars gathering for the big event. The 1959 original#1 was a nail biter finishing in the dark, and started the long line of top notch racing in the early months of each year. We were not going to miss the next event, for sure. But, as solid as the original events went, the evolving into what is called a "reunion event" is a misnomer, these days.

We could not get over seeing the top racers in each category and the event was outstanding. Pit passes allowed most to cross the staging area to get to the other side spectator positions for a different angle. In the early morning runs, we had the sun to our backs. Then as the racing move forward, we went over to the other side again, with the sun at our backs.

The Donnelly-Bolthoff 1934 Altered Coupe stood out from near and far.

“George Bolthoff began drag racing his street-driven '32 Ford at Santa Ana in 1951, then drove several stockers, including a Super Stock '57 Chevy that was converted to a C/Gas entry in 1959. Bolthoff later placed the injected engine into a B/A chassis that won class honors at the NHRA Nationals in 1960. The same engine was later used in a dragster chassis to begin Bolthoff's Top Gas career.”

I remembered that I had a digital copy of the actual, Donnelly/Bolthoff 1934 Ford Coupe original sounds made from an old December 1959 LP Album. With a little digital editing, it fit just right as a new sound added film of that old 1960 Bakersfield March Meet For the Altered Coupe. The sound was pretty menacing and very cool.

    Note:
Several local So Cal teams and drag racers made the trip back to Detroit for the 1959 U.S. Nationals and a company recorded the best sounds and information for a drag racing album. They (Donnelly-Bolthoff) ran the same red 1934 Ford Coupe at the Detroit location in September of 1959 and I filmed them at the Bakersfield Smokers March Meet in 1960.

It was how a 1934 Ford Coupe should have looked like if it were a legal street driven coupe. Nice red paint, great sounding motor and cool front mags in 1960. The previous photo racing against the Hart Automotive Coupe is a great photo, even with the different location was also very cool.
