Hello I am new to the HAMB but have read a lot in the past. I have a 1939 four door sedan, mostly original. I need to replace king pins and rebuild the brakes on it. where is the best place to buy good quality parts for it? Macs? Midwest? Speedway? These are the only places I know of so far.
When I need a part first I google “year, make, model and part nomenclature (what it’s called) usually get a nice selection of venders
Most of the "majors" you listed are not the best, Mac's (now "Eklers") is at the bottom of the list. Those that alchemy listed are a good start. I will ad "Joe's Auto Parts". There are a lot of good regional places also, so you really should add your general location it your profile. I think that "The Ford Barn" may have a pretty good list (if you can find it). I'd start there.
Thanks for all the quick replies. I appreciate it. I’m near York Pa, will try to figure out how to add that.
Another vote for Joe's. Also C&G and the Early Ford Store. Joe's Antique Auto Parts (joesantiqueauto.com) C&G Ford Parts Home Page (cgfordparts.com) Early_Ford_Store - San Dimas, California - 1928-1959 Early Ford Parts – Early Ford Store . San Dimas, CA
Welcome to the HAMB from E. Tennessee. @alchemy 's suggestions would have been my first choices, also. I don't know how much you know about replacing king pins so here it is. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/kingpin-spindle-bushing-setup.239133/
Excellent choices, Van Pelt for trans and many other units, Third Gen for a surprising coverage of what ever you may name. Now also Ford specific hardware. For suspension and brake stuff check with Kanter, in NJ. Can't forget the great ones in SoCal Joe's operates in M***. A lot of friends of Joe
I've been using CW Moss & C&G. I like Moss's web site and catalog. They seem to have stuff in stock also.
Wow there have been a lot more responses than I expected. I have been checking out the websites. I really appreciate this feedback I’ve been stuck for a couple weeks trying to decide which places to try thanks to all of you
thank you, I’ve done a lot of reading about the brakes and king pins, I think I know what I’m getting into just have to get some parts to get started
When you get to the brakes, have your original shoes relined; better stuff than the imported repop brake shoes. If you can't find a place local; Brake & Equip in MPLS does a good job and can also arc them to match your drums.
Thanks for the advice, I have done that on my antique Harley’s because new shoes don’t fit right. I was planning to do that however I’m not sure if my shoes are originals, someone has replaced the linings on the already. I figured I’d do it anyway and go from there.
I can’t say enough good about both Joes Antique Auto parts and Van Pelts. Both carry high quality parts and are great people to deal with.
Yeah, the last set of re-pop brake shoes I bought (35 years ago) wouldn't fit. The web was too thick.
