May 8, 1953 at 7:30 AM. Atomic blast and mushroom cloud 75 miles away, seen from Hotel Last Frontier, Las Vegas Strip. You’ve seen these famous photos, or maybe one of them. They were taken by Don English of the Las Vegas News Bureau, the resort-casino industry’s own PR team whose mission it was to get the name “Las Vegas” into the national media by any means possible. The atomic test in the 1950s proved to be guaranteed publicity. He planned ahead of time for these photos at Hotel Last Frontier hoping for the same effect. It's possible the swimmers at the pool were there for the photo, being 7:30 AM on a day that wasn't especially hot. The location of Last Frontier Hotel was the vast empty lot across the blvd from the Wynn.
