Hello, long time lurker, finally made a profile after years of randomly reading miscellaneous threads here. Picking up a 1961 Oldsmobile Super 88 early next month and wanted to say hello. Sooooo this will be a project, 4 sedan that has been sitting in the woods for quite some time. 394 with what the PO believes to be a automatic slimjim??? I will have to repair or replace the fuel tank. I will be repairing/replacing/servicing the fuel, ignition, cooling systems almost immediately depending on weather and work schedule before digging into the brakes and suspension. 4. I had a '62 Starfire rag top and a '64 Dynamic 88 4-door sedan. They were nice cars to work on, even the '64 with a transmission that made the Exxon Valdez look like an amateur job.

Spent some time working on the Super 88. Dropped the carb off to get rebuilt, got the generator tested(it's working properly), new pertronix ignitor with matching coil, rotor, wires and plugs. Started tearing into the cooling system a bit, got a new thermostat and radiator hoses, pulling the heater core and radiator and getting those tested, repaired or replaced. Check out some of the creative ingenuity that I would in part of the cooling system as well. Onto greener pastures my friends

  6. Welcome! Great to see another NW guy and a young one to boot!

  7. Cool car...I believe it's a 4 door hard top, not a sedan (no pilar between the doors when the windows are down). Nice project to make it roadworthy.

I was told it does/did run, I'll be trying to start it tomorrow after work when I get the carb back.

I think I would have tried it before dumping in a pile of money.

Honestly it's all stuff that needs to happen in the long run might as well get a jump on it and give the car a solid step in the right direction.

  13. Some good potential there. I tend to agree, firing off and verifying basic engine shape would give confidence in further work. Also agree that is a 4 door hardtop since no B-pillar.

  14. It looks great for something that’s been sitting in the woods for a long time. Everything I’ve seen that was in the woods wasn’t worth saving.

Very cool! If it is in fact the super high compression motor it’s very close to 11:1 compression so buy the good gas!

    Really dig the valve covers

Like Tim said get good clean gas even if you have to use a temporary gas source maybe a remote gas can. Good Luck looks like you have a great starting car
