If you look at my early posting on this thread, I praised Jimmy for the method he uses and honestly feel it is the best way to do an A chop. I have no hatred for his talents and abilities. Jim A - Is Bob the only one that can make jokes?
chopping is chopping, there are right ways and wrongs ways to do things.try and think a few steps ahead... if i cut this here what will that do? if you take your time that is a fairly easy one to do just take your time and know how to read a tape!
I'm just drawing my opinion by what I have witnessed IN PERSON! When the camera is on him,he was different then when I tried to talk to him in another setting. At the GNRS,he was really cool. But when there were other people around,it seemed like he was performing. I know he has talent, just no personality. But...YOU be the judge, and draw your own conclusions.....
My last useless word on this- having met a number of automotive related "celebrities" is I know one thing they all get REALLY tired of is the expectation that they will "PERFORM" for individuals they way they do in TV- or on stage if they are a music person. I can tell you the cameras make you act totally different- and that can be anything from total self-conciousness to complete arrogance, but whatever it is the FANatical leg-humping just gets old when a "car guy" just wants to hang out and be a car guy. I have even had "celebrities" thank me after a 20 minute car conversation when they would introduce themselves- I would say "I know who you are- I'm a fan" and then they thanked me for just acting like a normal person rather than a teenage girl- and I could see them keeping their back to the wide-eyed, finger pointing star chasers they were trying to ignore. I know some people will not change their star chasing ways and expectations- but realize that when a plumber takes a day off at a car show he doesn't want to fix any broken plumbing- same goes for the "celebrities" that don't want to hear how you have EVERY album and how you got your first action to side 2 of their 3rd CD- and ESPECIALLY the signature thing- because once that starts- every other leg-humper wants one too I said all that with a smile.
For once I'm gonna try and steer this one back to the topic. The so called "Jimmy Shine" chop is a very good way to chop your top. It's a little more in depth but the results are worth it. Just about any chop can be done numerous ways, just take your time and keep focused, pick a way you want to do your chop and follow through. Don't rush yourself.... The reason I put Jimmy in quotations is that I don't really think he was the first to chop a top this way, he just happened to get in a mag with it...
I recommend taking a whole week, and 1 hour a night just walk around the car, and try to find all the possible failures that might happen and avoid them.Good luck.
i'd bet it took even Jimmy a good week to do that chop. do NOT rush it if you want it to turn out half as good as this one did. i think the way Jimmy did it is VERY well thought out. think of who this guy has had for mentors over the years and what he has been exposed to. when it comes to something like this i would watch and listen VERY closely to what he has to say.
You want too cut your roof huh, so cut it I have done a few my self a close friend we have cut them all, rule one dont be in a hurry to get the roof on, rule 2 dont listen to you friends, usually to much beer , form your own ideas , rule three there are no rules this is hotrodin just do it if you screw it up you cut it off and redo it , if you dont think you can do I am sure there is a shop in your town that dont care how rod and cuustom does it this is hotrodin hell the the guys shine got it from never even had computers.....just my too cent s you will be fine take your time you will be happy with your job.......when you do it!
Wow, I don't understand all the b.s bad blood for craftsman in our trade. When Jesse James was a bike builder and not a movie star everyone would have sucked a d**k for one of his bikes. Once he got a show on t.v. everyone slashes him. His original thought was "hey this would probably give me some good publicity for my biz". Little did he know he would blow up like a teenage pop star in the t.v world. Same goes for Jimmy, he's just a guy like us. When I first saw his A pickup(before he was a star), I said this guy knows his s**t. Just cause he got caught up in all the California star b.s. doesn't mean he can't chop a top. I think our fellow H.A.M.B.er just liked the article, which by the way, I personally thought was very well shown. By the way, I saw Boyd at the Goodguys show in Scottsdale on a golf cart, as he drove by me on his golf cart he said Hi. I don't believe half the crap I see chopped for T.V.
Okay, don't listen to me. But,let me ask you this. When you stick your hand out to pet a dog,and it snaps at you,or bites you,do you believe it when the owner says" he's really a nice dog,he never acts like that". Or do you think something else? I'm done with this....
1. I'd have to think the dog is a highly trained a-hole alert dog. (Now that's just funny ) 2. Don't ever try and pet "celebrities" or strange dogs. Both prefer that you pretend they aren't there and eventually they will come around to YOU when they feel like it. It's all just fun Bob- I'll sign your signature book when you swing down next time.
Anyone got a link or scan of the original article that kicked off this thread? (Yeah I know how old this thread is, just like using the search function )
I'm getting ready to chop my 30 coupe and wanted to know if anyone has a way a link to that jimmy shine article I would be thankful
