This is my first time to use the HAMB site so hear goes. I am off to a good start on a 40 ford deluxe coupe project I picked up last summer. The axel backing plate flange to flange comes out at 51 1/2 inches all ford specs show nothing less than 52 1/2. I call the previous owner and he tells me it is from an Edsel. 11" drums, 2 " shoes. The rear takes special drum used on Rancheros, retractables, convertibles and station wagons. Any one out there that may have a pair?

I have a beautiful pair of standard size 11x2 drums on my 59 Edsel. But I need them....

on one of the Edsel fb pages recently someone posted a picture of the bed of a pickup truck full of Edsel rearends, many with drums on them. Of course I can't find it.

  3. I can't help on this one, but I noticed you've been here for 4 years and this is your first thread/post? Might be a record :)
Actually, maybe I can - check with this seller on ebay, he does a lot of 9" brake stuff staticz2229

Reminds me of a story...(Naturally! But a good one...)

10 year old Tommy attended a special school, had never spoken a word. Not in all his 10 years.
Doctors had examined him, could find no reason for this strange lack of speech.
One night, his family sat down to dinner, and as the meat loaf was served, his mother came out with the Broccoli.
Tommy jumped up and spoke...well, yelled is more accurate. "Not Broccoli! Not again..."
The whole family sat in shock for a few moments, then, "Oh, Praise the heavens! You can talk!"
His father was straight to the point: "If you could talk all this time, Tommy, why didn't you ever speak?"
Tommy replied, "Well... Up 'til now, everything was O.K."

Try NAPA. They sell many drums, (can still get '48-'52 F1 and '53-'56 F100; then some into the '70s)

  6. have had very good dealings with this seller^^^^^^^ I would inquire........:)

I'm pretty sure Mac's sells them, or used too. They are sort of expensive and the last rear end I had that needed them, I converted it to Explorer rear disks for a fraction of the cost. Don't tell Ryan though, I don't want to get banned. :)

I have two Edsel 9" rear ends........both with 5 x 5" bolt circle. I am using Ford truck 5 x 5 1/2" BC drums with redrilled lug holes. That may be an easier and less expensive solution.......

There were different flavors of Edsels. The 1958 Ranger and Pacer were made on the Ford body/chassis, while the Corsair and Citation were made on the Mercury. The 59s and 60s were all made on the Ford.

That might explain why you have 5" bolt circle Edsel rear ends.

^^^^^^^^ I am aware of that and sought the 5" circle rear ends specifically to gain that feature. Wanted them for BOP wheel match. The OP did not specify which he has, but based on the 11" x 2" dimensions, I am guessing he has the Corsair/Citation version. But either way, the brake diameter is the key dimension for selecting a compatible drum. I was merely (attempting to) suggest he be flexible in his search as wheel bolt pattern, or center whole for that matter, are 'negotiable'.

My 59 ranger has 11x2" brakes, I think that's the smallest they used in 59 on any of the Fords and Edsels? 57s and 58s used the skinny 1.75" shoes on the lesser duty cars.

There seem to be a lot of varieties on the different cars...and then there are the truck rears, that come with the 5.5" bolt circle, other than that they're pretty similar to the car rearends.

  12. I believe that the drums you are seeking are 11 X 2 1/4

Macs lists them as B7A-1126-B $119.95 each

At that price they better be correct !

    Hope this helps,Oldmics

on the 5x5 bolt circle try under 1958 to 61 Lincoln . Before you buy parts make sure you actually have a 9 inch some Edsels came with the 9.3 rear carrier. Every one that I ever saw{ 4 } of them had the larger rear came with the MEL series power plant.

  14. The 6-cylinder Edsels and Fords had the 1.75" x 11" shoes. I believe the axle bearings are 2 3/8" and the 8-cylinder ones are 2 1/2".

The stock 40 Ford rear measures 59 1/2 in. WMS to WMS so it looks like you are good to go.

    Yeah,
My 65 T-Bird 9 inch has the 2 inchers as well. I just broke down and paid eighty-five clams each drum. Sucks, but that's the cheapest I could find them.

  18. That's not a terrible price at all. I see them $99 to $139 on the repro-part sites. Be nice to know if they cross matched to a newer Ford product.

on those ones the friction surface is 2.84" wide, which is not what you want if you have 2" shoes

My 1959 Edsel Ranger Has A 9" Rear-end They Are 5x4.5 Or 5x114.3, I've Had Several over the years, They Have All Been 5x4.5 1/2x20 Wheel Studs. I've Never Seen Any With 5x5 Lug Pattern.

  24. The 58 Corsair and Citation, as stated had 5 x 5 BC. I got one, as Ray did, to match the front. Kanter was the last one I know to stock the rear drums, but no longer. It sounds like the OP has a 59, in which drums can still be found.

@59EdselGuy …. As stated by @Bangingoldtin above, upon introduction, Edsels came with 5x4.5” or 5x5” , depending on year and model. The ‘58 Edsel Ranger and Pacer, which were Ford based models, had 5x4.5” bolt circle. The larger/heavier Corsair and Citation, Mercury based models, shared the 5x5” bolt pattern of ‘57/‘60 Mercurys. I can’t swear to it, but as I recall, ‘59 and ‘60 Edsels were all 5x4.5” bolt pattern.

What is the width on the Edsel rears from outside to outside. I always thought they were the same as a 57/59 9 inch which is at 58.25 or there about.

  27. The 58 Edsel rear I have measures 59" WMS to WMS.
