Mopar flat sixes...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by RileyRacing, Sep 20, 2006.

  1. I know blueskies will pipe in on this one (I hope), but does anyone have any info on Chrysler's flathead sixes? Like this one... it's a 377. Where you you find something like this? Or someone over at moparchat mentioned there's a 413 six. Is this gynormous, like a GMC V12, or is it able to be stuffed into a car body?

    Anyone know?

the standard ones that you'll be able to get your hands on are the:
    Small Block (Plymouth/Dodge)
    201
    218
    230
    Big Block (Chrysler/Desoto)
    251
    265

i have a 53 cranbrook with a 218 in it. kicks ***! very strong six and gets great gas mileage. i am very happy with it. the only problem i have is adjusting the valves, makes a bit of a tapping noise. i bought a manual off of ebay that helped a lot when i did the engine swap. i can honestly say i could put that thing together with a blindfold by now.

for the biggest mopar flat six, look no further than the w-design engine in the m4a4 tank of ww2. basically 5 engines mounted radially on a common centerline. 650 hp 1250 cu inches. designed and bult by chrysler in 1942.

I would have to get my manuals out to be sure, but I think the engine pictured is a 331. They came in big trucks, and 3 ton Tractors in the 40's-50s. I have a complete one including the dual carbs and exhausts. They are very large and VERY heavy. Incredible torque, but really not much more power than a built 230 or 265. I've had the 413 engine which was really huge, over four feet long and around 1800lbs, neat but too big to be fun in anything smaller than a firetruck.

  7. Is that c.i.d. achieved thruoght bore and stroke variations, or is that an entirely different block{as in the "b" vs."rb" big block}???? If its all done with astandard block, and just crankshaft and bore,I would LOVE to find one of those intakes! And the carbs too!

  8. If you go to Inliners.org and find the Mopar forum, you'll find posts by Hud and Hudsonater (father and son). They detail how to mix and match parts to get the max displacement from a long block, I think about 275", plus more with overbore. Also many very good posts on performance and how to get a motor to spin at high revs without letting go. Hud runs a 230" in a tractor that will spin to 6000 rpm.

  10. I found that radial six at the WPC museum too, that's pretty bad***!

I too wondered about the cubes in that 377. there's a thread goin on moparchat about this too, that's why I brought it up here. Over there, if it isn't in a "muscle car" it usually gets ignored.

Thanks for the info, and keep it coming.
