    @squirrel,
    This is how I did the back bars. The gas tank wasn't there anymore but I think they would've missed that. The cover was a skin that I made by pulling a mold from the original.
    I didn't have a hard top.
    My wife hates that picture!

    Mark the striping looks good. Seeing solid axle customs these days is not a common occurrence.

    Jim (Vetrod62) good to see you post. I had thought that someone had some connectors made where one could remove the bars. Not sure if it was you or maybe Baron or?? Memory seems to be a bit less than 100% as the calendar moves on. Had a good day with the black car yesterday at a cruise event so missed your post. Take care.

    Hi Jim, The car with the removable roll bar was from a post on CF ? back in Oct.2011 by Brian Guardian. Those tubing connectors are not legal in the NHRA. Jim

    Does the left side vertical bar allow room for the drivers seat?

    Dad bought a new silver '66 Corvette when we were living in Harrisburg PA. Heavily optioned: 390/427, M-22, AM/FM, outside pipes, K-66, hardtop (got it painted black to match the leather interior), teak telescoping wheel, I think 3.73 rear, trunk rack (seen many of those?), a few more things. It was his daily driver for ten years. Snows and hardtop on every November, back off in April. He put 285,000 miles on it, which I doubt was related to the next owner who got it off the dealers' lot. About a year in he got the front bumpers removed ("Useless!") , had the "bumps" shaved and had the hood pinstriped around the carb bulge. As far as I could tell he was the only black man in Central Pennsylvania driving a Corvette for quite a few years. Led to some interesting "period" responses, like getting stopped every day for two weeks on his way to work by the same cop looking to "check the registration of the vehicle", and getting pulled over five times in two weeks (different cop) for "improper speed", which is how he explained ticketing Dad for doing 35 in a 40 mph zone. But it was a hellacious car; on full throtte at around 4,000R you couldn't hear anything over those outside pipes, and I can recall it getting between 9 and 18 mpg, back in the 39c for Premium days. Sadly, he traded it on a '75 which he kept for 9 months..couldn't stand the reminder near the shifter "170 HP". But when the C5 came out, he was enticed back and had two in a row, finally buying a Cadillac XLR.

    Zora used to refer to that taillight setup as "six-shooter".

    The actual original legend was that Zora wanted to crack the all-time record at the Pikes Peak hillclimb, but (as usual..) Corporate said "no".

    Respectfully doubt a 390 horse came with an M22. It's news to me so can you point us to something in print where Zora referred to 6 tail lights as "six-shooter".

    As a teenager in Harrisburg PA I read an article about these cars..and about six months later I saw one on a flatbed going through town. Only time I ever saw one. Beautiful car on--on-one.

    Yes it is! A few years back I tried to learn more about her from friends in the Rochester NY area where I believe she started out. Do you have info on her?

    Amen to that...hood fit on early Corvettes was a real hit-and-(mostly)-miss thing.

    Not exactly. For the 1966 model year St. Louis only built 15 RPO M22 equipped Corvettes. Considering the option RPO # M22 does not appear in any 1966 model year Chevrolet Dealer Showroom literature i.e. Dealer Showroom Album, Finger Tip Facts, or sales Brochure and had the same gear count as the M21, how many of those 15 M22's designed for racers do you think ended up in hydraulic lifter regular retail sales Corvettes? In a sense one could try and order anything they wanted. Didn't mean they'd get it.
