1948 Shifter Knob.jpg 1948 Shifter.jpg 1948 Shifter.jpg Hey guys, I need some help. I have a 1948 Ford column shifter in my 1932 3 window coupe. I would like to change the light gray shift knob to a dark brown knob. All I need to know is how do you get
the old shift knob off the handle without damaging anything. The knob will rotate but not come off.
    I would appreciate any help. Jeff 1948 Shifter Knob.jpg 1948 Shifter.jpg

I'd change the thread title to:

Ford, column shift, knob removal help

  4. I've never changed one, but I'd probably buy the new one and see if it comes with instructions. I've seen the arm without a knob and all there is is a shaft with 2 ribs in it to keep the knob from twisting.

I’m guessing the shifter has searations on the knob end. Press on. Could warm it and give a steady pull. When you change the light switch shaft knob heat and pull works.

Ok you would have to warm the outside of the knob a lot to get heat to the inside, So you then have dripping
plastic. Yes I did use heat to put the light switch knob on. Wouldn't it be easier to split the knob with a
Dremel tool and a baby death wheel. I was hoping to save original knob. Just wondered if anyone had
    removed the knob before?

I heat the metal shaft not the plastic. Splitting would be the easiest.

Split it, remember it's been on there since 48

When I did mine on the 41 I just crushed it down with some vice grips until it cracked and then pushed the new one on with a little bit of Permatex inside to keep it on

  10. When in doubt call the replacement part supplier and ask what they recommend.

End of shifter has concentric ribs. Knob is two piece.

  12. Dog gone if I didn't just learn something. Are the 2 parts then glued together? Is there a C clip then that holds the bottom piece on the shaft?

If the knob is in good shape, couldn't you just paint it the color you want?
