Finally got the kit's in these 750s. Would like to try them on the race car with a torque converter change.
Guess I should get that car fixed and running again.

As much work as that car need, not sure I can pull that off. Way to many irons in the fire at this time and sadly enough most of them are not mine.

What is this engine? The heads and valley pan are Pontiac but the oil fill, valve covers and timing cover are different.

 

That’s a Studebaker engine, they started out at 239 cubic inches and by the ‘60’s they were 289. The limited production R-3 and R-4 engines were bored to 304c.i. and blueprinted by Granatelli’s Paxton Engineering.

 

Not my first guess. Back to traditional engine school for me.

 

Thats a Packard/Studebaker 289ci. This one just happens to be in my buddy's 58 Packard Starliner. We have done quite a bit of customizing on this car including fabricating those air cleaners. We bought the round outer covers but fabricated the screens and the housings to fit the WW carbs.

Please tell me more about the (58?) Studebakered Packard. I'm probably wrong (not unusual), but I remember Ford using the "Starliner" name for more than a couple years before this car was built.

 

You're not wrong. Ford used the Starliner name in the early 60s. I might be wrong on the Stariliner name for the Packard, it might just have been Starlight. It wasn't an emblem on the car or anything. I think it was on advertising for the 2dr coupe. I think they only made about 680 of the 2dr couples.
1958 was the last year of Packard, they had been bought out by Studebaker. The Packards were basically Studebaker with some extra bits added on; dual headlight pods, extra fins, etc.

 

Starlight was the name Studebaker used for its no-pillar 2-doors hardtops from (I believe) 53 forward. When the Hawks came out, I'm not sure they continued it. Perhaps then they used it on that good-looking Packard in 1958.
