I try to keep an open mind and NOT knock another man's pride and joy, but that's just ridiculous.

I'll step in it. I'd race that clown car for 10 grand any day. Friggin abomination. Quick change rear too, for what lol.

My bad. It's 2023 and everyone gets a trophy. Everyone has a 'gasser'.

    Hello,

With the proliferation of “up in the air” style competition cars supposedly in the “street legal” Gas Coupe and Sedan classes from the early 50s drag racing classes to the fading out of all “street legal” competition around the mid 60s, that time period needs some clarification.

The national organizations were fading out, the ordinary myriad of competition classes from factory stock to street roadsters. The Gas Coupe and Sedan classes that were deemed street legal with license registration for daily street driving was the norm. they drove on the streets during the week to school, jobs, other road trips and then on Saturday, drove to the local dragstrips.

When the rules started changing along with the long term notion of Top Fuel/FX cars only racing, melded into exhibition only races, to the T/F and funny car designations, all was lost for the little backyard garage coupes/sedans/street roadster/street legal folks. How can a street legal gas coupe have 8 individual header pipes and no muffler system?

After 1960, the drag racing competiton gas tanks out of the cab for a rear trunk or behind the grille took off for safety and for competition only, allowed them outside of the radiator. Then the copy cats took part in moving their moon tanks outside and then became an insurance company’s/CHP nightmare for public safety.

So, the minimal copycats of competition cars had their short lived time on the streets and the modifications continued on at the drag strips. Drag racing classes that we all came from the origins of drag racing morphed into 1000+ hp funny cars and rear engine dragsters with minimal participation from the backyard garage hot rod folks. That is too bad.
upload_2023-5-28_4-57-29.png Street legal in terms, but no front bumper, gas tank in the crash zone, slicks sticking out of the body and license plate not in front or if there is one, not motor vehicle plate installation height as required by law.

What about the current crop of “up in the air” cars? They are a small group within a small group and no one can claim any insurance vehicle inspection for safety as per rules for public street driving and/or CHP safety rules. An aluminum gas tank as the barrier for crush proofing in a heavy sedan 12-15 inches higher than any normal factory built legal car for the streets?
upload_2023-5-28_4-56-45.png Street legal in the 60’s with legal DMV inspection for registration? Today???

All aspects of stock bodied legal CHP and local authorities check points would have claimed violations if any of those “up in the air” cars that came through the vehicle check points so prevalent in So Cal back then. That started the decline. So, the mammoth vehicles still roam the streets and not to the safety aspects unknown to the insurance company inspectors and CHP enforcement programs. Don’t kill the messenger, it is just an observation and setting the record straight. Accidents happen and we don’t need a “Viking Lance” to stick into the safety fray…YRMV

^^ not something I'd do to a '55 Chevy 2 door sedan today, but it looks like a fairly old custom, and old custom survivors are cool, so I guess that's pretty neat. Looks fully functional with glass, that's further than a lot of chopped customs get.
