    Hello,

After seeing this old movie in 1958 at our nearby community movie theater, I was laughing at how silly the whole concept seemed. Steve Mc Queen was fighting “The Blob.” Since I was 14, those memories still linger at how silly those movies were back then… wow, science fiction. I was growing up physically and could take care of myself in most cases. A young teenager.

upload_2023-6-6_3-47-54.png Santa Fe Theater on Santa Fe Avenue and Hill Street. Turned into a bowling alley during our junior high school days and eventually closed as that activity waned in the general public eye.

But, my mom constantly used to tell the story of the Blob and me when family came over, whether to embarrass me or get everyone to laugh at those stiff family events. Even much later when I brought my girlfriend, soon to be my wife, for dinner one night. Being college students did not stop the stories from coming out and everyone getting a big chuckle about it.

I was ill with a nasty cough, temperature and congestion. My Bronchial Asthma must have kicked in, but I was sick. In bed for several days was the mode of the day/night. So, the story goes that late at night, early in the morning around 2:30 am, my mom found me in the living room, swinging my arms, as if I was boxing someone. Swinging away at the front door which was open. She tried to grab me from behind but I ignored her by pushing her away and kept going for the object in the door way.

She kept calling my name and trying to keep me from going outside. But I was still standing and now, pushing with both hands/arms straight out to get “whatever” out of the door. One thing my mom related was that I was saying out loud, “Get out or my mom will be mad at the mess you are making…” Still pushing straight into the air toward the wide open front door. That was weird and funny when she was telling the story for everyone.

Well, the outcome of the story was that I must have been able to push “The Blob” outside and my mom closed the front door. She said she led me back to my bedroom and fell into bed still asleep. So, I must have been in a temperature driven illness that created some fears from the movie I had watched earlier in the previous week. Major fears came out without me knowing about it.

The only thing I remember about the whole incident was at the beginning, when I heard the front door open and I was standing there looking at what was pouring into the living room. The rest of the story came from my mom’s sharp recollection and the story continued for ages in our family history for a big round of chuckles. The whole thing was as if I was part of the “walking dead…” Ha!
