SCAMMER, Buyers Beware of robrat_oldnewparts from Beaumont Texas? This car belongs to my 85 year old friend. He hi-jacked my ad here on the Hamb Cl***ifieds. He just posted it all over Instagram with several #hashtags. He even copied my write-up and lowered the price! Please Be Careful, he may try to steel your car next!

    Fellas its pretty simple.

    Reverse google search the images
    Check their profile
Always ask for a LIVE video chat with the seller, car/parts, ID.
Tell them you will only ever pay with Paypal GOODS AND SERVICES.

Those 4 things nearly always cull the scammers.

Be vigilant. They are getting smarter setting up business FB pages etc but generally dont have websites.

I had an ‘under priced’ deuce grille come up on facebook a few months back.
I googled the ‘good’ English and it took me to an 8 year old add here on the Hamb by @HOTRODPRIMER with exactly the same photos……….

It amazes me that people buy **** off these huge platforms using insecure payments forms like PayPal friends and family, wires, checks, etc…

Fools and money are easily parted. I'm a cheap SOB so I'm essentially scam-proof. A crooked seller will always tip his hand.

I tell them I'm in the area at a near time and would like to pick it up and pay cash. The resulting silence is deafening.

Not on Instagram but is there anyway to report scams? And if there is, would it do any good? Just asking.

I've always asked if the seller will take a credit card down payment. If they refuse, I tell them I have a friend in their area I'll send over to deliver the down payment, and look the car over. At that point they always begin to wiggle around, and make excuses. Or they simply stop all communication.
If this was my car being scammed, I'd be contacting the seller and cornering him by trying to pretend to be a buyer. I know nothing about Instagram, but can't people post replies there to warn buyers?

  17. I also do this very thing! As a transporter, I am all over the country & many times see something I can't live without advertised on one of the many "for sale" sites before I head out on a trip. The honest ones welcome having me come with cash, the others......CRICKETS!

    God Bless

I've seen that same guy on Instagram reposting other HAMBer's stuff for sale as his own.

You get a couple of payments a week for stuff you don't have and never will and you have quite a bit of extra spending money. That is what he is counting on.

It's getting to where the only adds you can trust are the "will not ship" local pickup cash only" adds.

I've been on the HAMB around 18 years, it's a tight community of great car guys & gals that care about the hobby and do a nice job looking out for each other. Thanks for looking out!

Yeah, that’s what I do. Tell them I’d like to come over and check it out. I can’t imagine buying a car unseen, new or old…

Buying and selling is simple if honesty and candor rule the day. If it smells dead, well don't eat it. Holy **** that could take a left turn but I digress. For places like IG and FB marketplace I like folks to know I am for real immediately. After a cpl years on IG I've gotten to know some sellers so well I've actually mailed them cash for smalls. And some have sent me stuff before being paid. You know, networking? I like to think that such actions help keep the pond s*** buildups to a minimum. This all as hard or as easy as we can make it. I like easy. I'm easy. ****, another potential left turn...o_O

Just sold a GM seat that I was able to ID with responses to a "what is this seat from" post here on the HAMB. Sold it with a Facebook post. Guy was a semi truck driver on his way to Phoenix. No drama. Face to face cash in hand transaction at a nearby rest stop on I-10. Just got to use some common sense with Facebook and the other sites.

I would be willing to bet this is the same dude from Beaumont Texas. He is trying to sell a '34 Ford grille using pictures from a HAMB ad in 2017. And, he is using pictures from MISS-B-HAVEN SPEED SHOPPE to make it look like he is actually building stuff.

I ratted him out on Facebook.

I just bought a pair of newly chromed 327-350 hp valve covers from a guy in Nebr on facebook. He had $100 on them and dropped them to $40 bucks. I messaged him and he sent me his ph number. That told me he was ok. Talked to him and sent him a postal money order, he shipped them to me for $12 Got them today and they were packed nicely and are beautiful. Gonna buy a set of 300 horse heads next week. There is still good guys out there. Lippy

It amazes me how many sellers seem pissed if you wont do friends and family. They list their items that way and act like your an ***hole if you wanna do it legit. It's like 3% or something. Factor it in.

Kinda getting OT here. But the bigger problem for sellers is if it is paid as non F/F, the seller also has to consider it as income on their federal tax returns. So they actually would need to add in whatever their tax bracket rate is too. Are buyers willing to pay 25% more?
