First try at posting pix. hope it works. My garage is the size of most '32 guys walk in closet, that's why this thing is so short, plus I belong to a doodlebug club, and rather like the modified look, and yes it's blitz black. Has an 8ba, '39 trans, rodsville rear with culver city cover, schroeder steering, I'll put up more pix. if this works.
Ah. I was thinking it was for sale. Here is the thread. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=132197
Thanks for the link, missed it somehow, put it on the FB. to see if there was any interest, all the interest was from out west. Dumb *** me, build a lakes car for the east coast. Oh well, guess I'll just have to drive it.
Mike, I posted the pics that you sent me, hope you didn't mind. Anyway, welcome to the HAMB! Tell everyone the story behind the car. Rich
Mike , ..please tell us the story !.. I actually thought it was a Cut-down phaeton when I first saw the pix posted on Richs`thread .. Waay cool Hot rod !! Klaz
well shoot, fate worse than death! I hope you can power through it and take one for the team! Just kidding, man that's a very cool car, you should be proud to drive it
OK, Car was an original 50s chaneled hot rod from southern N.Y. as far as I have been able to chase it back, the guys father that I bought it from bought it in 1965, it was in pieces then. I have a lead on the owner before that, just haven't chased down his son yet. Most guys who knew the car are gone now. It had an 8ba. and guide lights etc. before, my buddy found a picture at a swap meet of a '32 roadster sitting in the remains of a burnt out garage, it was chaneled, and came from the same area, when I was cleaning this one up, I noticed deep gouges all over the body, looks like someone took an old putty knife, and s****ed the old paint off. I'm thinking after the fire someone tried to bring it back, and gave up. I can't make a positive ID. from the picture, But I can't imagine there were too many chaneled '32 roadsters in one area. The guy I bought it from was kind of hard to deal with, orig. only got the cowl, and was going to build a '32 doodlebug just to break balls, but then got the doors, ( here's where everyone says you idiot ) I eventually ended up with the whole thing. Extended the frame, mocked it up as a full roadster, walked around it for weeks trying to decide how to build it, and decided I didn't want a full roadster. Sold the quarters and deck lid to a well known restorer of '32s in M***. And built what I wanted. A big part of the decision to sell the stuff was that we are in our 8th straight year of college tuition, and really couldn't afford to build the whole car. The sale of parts financed the rest of the project. Oddly enough, I have no regrets, I love the way it came out, and I figure if the only reason you're doing it is to see how much money you can make off of it, you're doin' it for the wrong reason.
Rich, Didn't mind at all, you do a lot better job of posting than I do. And thanks for the welcome. Mike
Hey Mike, "bug" looks great. Thanks for posting the photo and the story that goes along with it. Not sure if you saw this photo that was taken of us in July so I thought I would post it here. I hope you don't mind.
Does Denise know everyone with an old car? Maybe there's more than one of her? Has she been cloned? Here is the fire pic, I posted it earlier too....
Well, isn't that kool as ****. I've seen old hot rod pics but none of hot rods that got stuck in a burning building. Sad but Kool.
Well, I'm glad you sold the parts because you funded a winner. Man the cars being completed on the HAMB right are out this world. Great stance, love the shorten body and the tank. Awesome! Someone needs to give this one the Superfly! JON
Mike, it's the guys from Elrod's Hotrods. We're glad you put this on the hamb for everyone to see. We know you put alot of sweat into the doodlrod and you can tell by the craftmanship. He has hand made just about every part on it and he's not a bad welder either. The best part about it is Mike went with his instincts and built it in his small barn where he keeps horses. Mike also knows alot about hotrodding history and it is evident when you see his work. Hope you can make it to Sidney Airport on October 2. Good luck with the wiper and hope its road legal. Thanks, Joe www.elrodshotrods.com
Man, I read Ryan's post about your barn find and hearing what you did about made me sick. I'm sure I'm not the only one that dreams about finding a deuce roadster in a barn......yaeh, yaeh, yaeh. But, after seeing the pic of it in the fire, I can see it might not have been in the greatest shape. To make out like you did and still have a sweet looking lakes ride is awesome. Cudos my friend you did well!!
Thanks everyone for the nice remarks, and Ryan for the feature thing. Going to try and make it in May, Larry, been talking with the guys at Elrods hot rods, and will travel down with them. Thanks again Mike
its hard for me to understand why; especially since I have never owned a 32, or even think I could in the future. Its a nice layed-out ride. Im dissapointed, especially since seeing the old picture. It would have been a great feature to see it arose from the dead. I love roadsters, but could never come to my senses to even think of cutting it down that way to make a mOdified out of it. I have said my peace, Congrats on the build. Very cool.
Trust me I wrestled with the idea for quite some time, not an easy thing to do. But I sold the quarters, deck lid etc. to one of the best '32 restorers in the world, so I know that those parts will become another 1st cl*** '32 roadster, and I have mine, so where there was 1 now there will be 2 more '32s in the world, and both with orig. parts.
I like your ride. Modifieds are the true Hot Rods, and making one out of an orig Deuceroadster takes guts. You did good. Would like to see a shot from the front also. Paul
