Shop safety- wedding bands- what material?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by a/fxcomet, Sep 17, 2006.

  1. From a safety stand point, NO RING!

    That's better than no finger.

Mine's gold...but I do not wear it in the shop-or any jewelry for that matter. My career is in the printing industry, and I spend my time near big machines that have spinning rollers and gears. Most of the guys in the shops I've worked in don't wear rings. I've personally seen the damage done to a finger by having a ring caught-and it took the surgeons a long time to saw the remains of the ring off before they could work on the hand. Heard about a guy getting Killed when his neck tie was dragged into a machine. You get the idea. Jewelry and loose clothing near machines=bad idea. Get what YOU like and wear it when it's safe.

53Ash has opted for Demascs Steel we found it on e-bay for 160 or so. It's up to him when and if he wears it. I couldn't live with my self if my wedding ring was the cause of any harm to him. He feels the same about me and my ring ... mine comes off when I'm working in the shop.

  5. It has already been said many times here, but after working in a production shop for nearly 30 years, the only 'shop safe' wedding band is to not wear one at all while working the line

  9. This is what happened to me several years ago while working on my daughter's car.I normally wear a good sized chronograph but take it off(along with my wedding ring-white gold)when working on a car.

This particular day I was wearing a watch that my wife had given me for my 50th birthday;a really nice thin gold electronic watch with a gold mesh bracelet.Even though it is solid gold,it feels very light when wearing(compared to the chrono I usually wear)and I neglected to remove it.It also has a habit of sliding around so that the watch is on the inside of my wrist.

I was holding a long screwdriver in my right hand with the blade pointed towards my elbow and I'm leaning over the engine compartment trying to find a cooling system leak(figured it was a loose hose clamp)and I put my hand on the top of the engine(FWD car)to balance myself. My hand settles on top of the alternator, the screwdriver blade contacts the B+ pole on the alternator and also the gold mesh bracelet of my watch at the same time.

All of a sudden I have this exquisite burning sensation on my wrist and realize my watch is trying to set fire to my wrist.Gold being an excellent conductor of electricity and a locking bracelet that is difficult at best to open all conspire to give me a perfectly circular blister on the inside of my wrist about an inch in diameter instantly.

Amazingly enough the electronics in the watch weren't harmed! It still keeps perfect time and is fine except for one vaporized link in the bracelet.

Needless to say I make it a point to remove ANY jewelry I happen to be wearing before entering the garage now. Someone once said that,"Stupidity should be painful........and it usually IS!" Truer words were never spoken.

Enclosed is a pic of the scar after four years!

I had a gold ring smashed so bad the ER had to cut it out. It cut nearly all the way around my finger and nearly all the way through. There were actually points where you could not see the ring because the skin closed back around it. It hurt. ALOT.

I now wear a Platinum ring. A good heavy one that is "Euro" cut. The Euro cut is hard to explain. I guess the best way to explain it is it's like a rounded off square.

Maybe I'll lose my finger someday. Who cares. Once they have your BALLS everything else is just parts.

Besides, I could save a ton of money on gloves at the outlet stores. :)

Remember in "The Abyss" when Ed Harris is saved by his wedding band? What a crock...

  14. Mine's gold. If I am doing heavy work in the garage, I actually have a hook on the side of my tool box that I hang my ring on. It's the only place I take off my ring so if I "lose" it, I know exactly where it is. Once or twice I forgot to put it back on and believe me... women notice. "Where's your ring?" and I'm like "Oh shit...." but yeah. Always take them off when working. One nice thing I like about my ring is that the inside of it is beveled, so if it does get caught on something, the edges of the ring do not cut into my skin.

I wear a silver claddagh in 7 years this is ring number 3 the others have all been destoryed. It seems when they get grabbed by something the hands let go of the heart. I still got that finger.. All the parts washer solvent and everything else on the silver makes it shine like hell..

Same thing happened to me--my metal watchband touched the alternator pole while the engine was running--I immediately took off the watch, and like an idiot I put it in my pocket. Still very hot!
And I too still have a quarter-sized scar on my wrist, some twenty-five years later.

But I got the NO RINGS rule hammered into me when I was an aircraft maintenance specialist in the Air Force. They had these really gruesome films they made us watch . . .

Tungsten carbide for me, but after one month of wearing it I broke it. They sent me a new one. Despite what the jeweler says you can scratch it. I've had the second one for a year, all I ever do is wipe off the fingerprints. It's a slippery mofo though, be careful when washing your hands!

I will have to agree also. I dont know why, but i was looking at ogrish.com last night and they had a photo of a guy who was working on a scaffolding. I guess he fell and his ring got hooked and it literally stripped the skin off of his finger. You could see the bone sticking out like the stick of a corndog. It was disgusting! Unfortunately they werent able to save his finger. Just take it off at work. Im sure the misses will understand, if not just show her the pictures:eek:

Dont listen to jewelers advice when it comes to Titanium rings. Jewelers like to trash talk Titanium because they dont sell it. Titanium isnt some "super metal". It is actually not much stronger than common steel, the difference is that it is just considerably lighter. My wifes cousin is a paramedic and he has cut through a couple titanium rings already with the standard cutter in the ambulance.

Titanium scratches like any other metal and as a result it also polishes like any other metal. I cant really think of something that wont get minor scratches from everyday wear.

It cannot be resized though. So dont get fat. Put the fork down, use it as some motivation once you start using the other holes in your belt. Titanium rings are machined since the allow cannot be melted and shaped like gold.

My wife and I have titanium wedding bands (and her engagement ring) and we love them. They are VERY lightweight and durable (they dont get bent up and turn "square" like gold rings do) and we both like the look of them. We got ours from www.titaniumrings.com. She has the "Atom" as an engagement ring and I have the "Zuzu" with a platinum inlay.

All that being said. I NEVER wear my ring when I am working in the garage or with any tools. Most fingers will give way well before the ring does (regardless of which metal it is made of).

My wife "whined" about me wearing a ring. I told her to ask the guy that drove truck for her dad what happened to his (completely missing) ring finger. That was the end of the "wedding band whine".

My boss wears his ring on a chain round his neck.

My dad burnt his wrist badly and welded the links on his watch strap by shorting it across the soliniod, boy did he jump around!

I never wear any watches or jewlery while working at work or home.

  28. just dont get married. problem solved. ha ha.

I had pretty god luck with my titanium one until I lost it in a lake playing with the kids.
