    Hello

I have a 50 Chevrolet 3100. I blew up my differential a couple of weeks ago.

I got a new lsd built. New bearings and all.

On my first test drive my right axle came out. The bearing had slipped of the axle.

I cold pressed the bearings on.

Any suggestions on what to do?

What kind of rear end is it? Most GM 10 bolt rear ends don't use press on bearings, they use a C clip to hold in the axles.

But if it uses a press on bearing, did you press the lock ring on too? or just the bearing? Wheel bearings need a lock ring, you know.

I'm horrid on things that don't have the full actual name them lsd? this is not a term I know.

    OK Lsd = limited slip.

What type of rear axle does this limited slip carrier ride in? inquiring minds need real factual information. When you stump Squirrel and myself in the same shot that means you did not provide enough information and ***UMED far too much.

I had a Bop rear end that had press on axle bearings. Maybe that's what he's talking about

It's a third member, drop out differential. 10 bolt 8,2" 55-64 type. Yep I pressed on the lock ring as well. Seems like my axle may be worn by some reason.

It's a 55-64 drop out 10 bolt rear end 8,2". With an Auburn differential. My axles seems to be worn by some reason. The bearing and retainer pressed on pretty easy. I guess new axles. Hoped for an less expensive solution, but I dont know

I wonder if knurling the axle is an option or is the risk too great?

A few well respected guys in San Jose tack welded the retainers on, 4 little tacks. Come right off with 4" wheel.
    Cheaper than axles...
My beautiful '63.5 Galaxie spit out the right rear axle, so I hastily turned right (up a R.R. crossing where I rolled to a stop. I jumped out and blocked the tire with a rock.)
I told my 7 yr. old daughter, Amy there was no emergency brake 'cuz the drum went off the brake shoes.
Wiseacre Amy: "Some emergency brake..." Actually made me laugh.
Pal Rich Roberts was driving by, rescued us in his Chevy Cameo.
Another bud with tow truck went out and lifted rear, towed it home for me.
I asked him: "Stevadore, when you get to the entrance street, could you please come right up Secretariat, so the whole neighbor hood doesn't start talking?"
About an hour later, I'm hearing a truck horn and an emergency horn going off, one after the other, all kinds of racket!
Steve drives up with my Gal. in tow, laughing his *** off.
EVERYBODY in the neighborhood had been alerted. Thanks, Pal.

Now that we know what it is we're working on..... :)

sounds like you need another axle, or if you want to live dangerously you can try welding on the ring. I wouldn't .

So I guess the cheap way out is giving it some tacks. The best way is to buy new axles. I still thinks a press on retainer ring is whats keeping my wheels inside my fenders is somehow not the best feeling. What would be the downside by tack welding them? Weakening the axle? Of course the tracks could break over time, but still the retainer wont p*** by the tacks.

Did you press the lock ring on or heat cherry red and drop it on? Heating is the way to do it, they drop into place and stay put once cooled off.

Specs on the bearing show 35.001 mm bore on the bearing. or in US speak 1.378 inches.

If the axle is 34.850 or so that makes me wonder if someone hasn't taken the emory cloth to it in the past to clean it up after it got roughed up a bit.

I had a 61 Chevy car rear under my 48 when I put it together in 1973 and they are exactly the right width. We sure had to cut a lot of brackets off the housing though. Screenshot (1738).png

The bearing retainer ring is just mild steel. once pressed on you could run a bead of weld around the od to shrink it some?

FWIW lok***e makes an industrial bearing setting product designed for loose fitting bearings ,we used it on an industrial piston pump shaft bearing , still going 30 years later! No , I don't recall the particulars .

Wonder if that pump shaft ever goes around a corner at speed? :)
