40 Fords are popular BECAUSE of the way they look.

  5. Looks like a 37. It don't look bad but if it were mine it would stay a 5 window.

I thought it looked really good.
But yeah, I see where those other guys are coming from...change ****s. I don't think I can get enough of the same old way it's been done for the last 60 years.

I'd love to have a 36 3W and/or a 40 coupe, but not a homoginization of the two. I feel relieved that I'm not alone.:)

Yep that is what this site is about. I couldn't say it any better.

  8. The roof looks like it is pregnant with a sedan delivery due any time. Lengthening the doors by half a foot (or more?) and changing the shape of the upper rear corner of the doors would help that.

  9. I always liked this one:D

I wouldn't kick outta my garage. Looks different, but I kinda like it. I probably wouldn't have done it if the top was in good shape to begin with, but.....I'd get it if the price was right.
There is a green one here in Okla. that I see running around at the Shawnee swap meet the last coupla years. Looks like he just filled in the rear qtr win., Now that one I don't like.

I doesn't look like any 37 that I have seen. It does look like one of those 3 window fake, plastic, 37 replicas. Ford never made a 3 window 37. I have had guys stand and argue that their granddad had a 37 3 window.
    Never happened.

that one looks OK to me... though it is not something I would do. at pleasanton in 04 there was a dark blue one, done with the the 40 top, and 2 door sedan doors. I don't think it was chopped... as a matterof fact it was kind of "restored"

believe it or not, it looked EXCELLENT, as if henry ford made a 3 window. I'll try to dig up a pic.

there should be a law that once a mercedes headlight is removed from a mercedes it must be crushed in a 50 ton press.

    I like it...
Sure I'd like some changes made...maybe even take some thickness off the rear of the top and section the car slightly...but some creative paint work alone would help a great deal just as it sits!
I can't figure what everyone hates so much about it! It's a raw canvas that needs completing...

Looks like a chopped 40 Willys roof and door posts. Kinda tough to warm up to.

I don't like it either. If the doors were lengthened it would look better, oh and unchop it a bit too.

Calm down purists... It was done way back when too!

I give you the Earl Bruce (I think?) 40 Ford coupe from back in the day. Not that the proportions are different, but I think you might be reacting to the way the car looks now. Picture it tail-dragger style, with skirts, wide-whites, and deep laquer...?

Also a pic of a Westerguard Chevy coupe for reference.

NOTE: I failed to mention that these images came from Rik Hoving's amazing Custom Car Photo Archive. Sorry Rikster, I've been know to be an idiot from time to time...

Bob Creasman's (sp?) '40, before the fadeaway front fenders. This car was a very early custom.

They thought it was a good idea back then...

Regarding the car of topic - Yes, the Mercedes headlights should go back on a Mercedes, but I really think this car could be finished up to look pretty damn cool. Just think, someone here could save it from being STREET rodded!

Blackie, no offense, but I think it looked like **** when they did it back then too, it screws with the proportions of the car. This car doesn't look that bad to me. One of the great things about the '40 Fords is the design is about as close to perfection as you can get, there's not really anything you can change on them to improve their origional styling, except maybe a drop axle.

It's not how far you chop. It's how it's done. I think 40's really need all the windows. The trunk is long. The roof gets gets really thick looking filled windows. I'm sure all of us have seen better and worse
As you all know I'm happy with this :)

    no offense taken...

If I may though I would say that the proportion of a '40 Fod 3- window, if done correctly, would not be any different than a '36 Ford 3-window, which, if anyone knows me, knows that I regard the '36 3-window as perfection in auto styling.

With that said, if I had a '40, it would definitely remain a 5- window.

I love the Earl Bruce 40, check out the 41 Studebaker tailights. Magazine writers always say that it is wrong to change a 40, so they can keep their resto-rods, I prefer customs! I am not going to buy that E Bay car, b ut since it is local I will keep my eye out to see if it gets finished. 40 Ford headlights look great on 40 Fords, not Mercedes.

I like it too, (although the doors need lengthening/qtrs?)
    and I have a semi-stock 40 coupe.
at least they used a similar era/make top and not an oddball roof.

one thing that ****s having one is people saying oh thats perfect,
henrys best design, don't mess it up.
It brings out the restorers in the hot-rodding crowd,
guys that probably ruined alot in there early days
    seem to be the loudest.

    this might work,
but there is another one did a while back.
