Technical ‘32 B engine oil breather cap leaking

    Hi, on my B engine, I have the stock oil filler tube and cap on the engine but while driving, the car likes to eject drops of oil out of the cap. It’s not a lot of oil but was wondering what the solution was for keeping oil from coming out the breather cap?

    I’m tired of a messy firewall and the occasional stink from it cooking off hot parts.

    Does it have the right filler tube? The proper tube has baffles in it to prevent that issue. If nothing else works, try installing one of the road draft tubes available from Model A - B parts vendors. Check for proper cap, too. The one you show looks like a stock Model A cap.

    looks like it needs a gauze filter element in it like the later versions had.

    I doubt that the cap is stock.
    The bar code almost suggests a reproduction one…….
    Yes, - a gauze of some description would help.

    You might want to put some stainless steel mesh similar to a Brillo pad inside the cap. We used it as a demisting screen so that the oil vapors would condense on the mesh and turn back into a liquid and drip back down the pipe.

  10. The later B model has a longer and bigger diameter I believe the earlier had a longer tube but same diameter as model A

    the one on left is model A and right model B
    If you pack the cap you will probably start leaking out the rear main because of blow by

    The stainless steel I am referring to is like coarse steel wool and just provides surface area for the vapors to condense on. You're able to see light through the mesh so I don't see that causing any restriction causing a buildup of pressure in the crankcase.

    Thank you for the replies. I did find some online info about the larger diameter oil filler tube but no one sells it or it’s “out of stock”.

    Anyone on here have an extra they’d like to sell?


    or does anyone have photos of what my cap is supposed to look like with mesh?

    Note: my engine was recently rebuilt and in top top shape.

    If the engine is newly rebuilt the rings may not have broken in yet, creating the excessive blow by. Just add a copper scouring pad inside the cap and drive it like you stole it to get those piston rings settled in.

    Nobody reproduces the B filler tube. I looked long and hard to find some.

    It looks to me like someone cut the tube down. The baffle should not be at the top of the tube. Try Berts in Denver for a used tube. A better cap would be a plus. The cap you show looks like the stock cap for a Model A. Put some steel wool in it but don't pack it tight. I definitely don't like the look of that tube and I think it's a big part of your problem.

    IMG_3896.jpeg Well, I metaphorically “stepped in “it” today”. Went to a friends house to rebuild a model a starter and he happens to have a unicorn in one of his many many many parts boxes. Like many of us, he doesn’t throw away anything so lucky me !!!
