We ran against this Corvette many times with the MG at Dover drag strip where this picture was taken

it’s a beautiful Vette.

 

Perhaps it's just as well that we can't see it from this angle but, based on my experience, there was almost certainly some really ugly damage to the quarter panel when that wheel came off. It looks as if the axle is still in place so it must have sheared the axle studs. That is, unless someone forgot to torque the lug nuts?

 

Quite often the lost wheel was due to the use of spacers and/or wrong lug nuts as the tires improved.

 

I think that 59 Chevy is George Vogelsberger of NY, he was on hamb 4or 5 years ago but passed away.

1320 is that Bortman in the 59 Chevy? And I swear that 80% of the 59 Chevy's around that time were painted yellow.

Yes. In 1968 it was Dave but a few years later his wife was also driving and winning.

I'm a believer in emptying the secondary bowls on a regular basis. To keep fresh fuel in them, of course.
