Hey guys. I have built a few fun, fast little creations over the last two winters but they were always more rat rod with tire destroying horsepower than anything else. I have been thinking of doing a gasser that is very 60's correct and would like to have some input from the hamb guys on it, when I get the car I will pst some pics as well as keep progress pics coming, hotrodtohells evil 55 has truly been my recent want to build one of these as I think it is so bad @$$ to see a drag/gasser style car cruisin down the road. Any who, it is a early falcon, it will be SBC powered, dual quads, blah blah blah... I am interested in paint scheme Ideas, sheetmetal modification ideas and anything else that would have been from that era. Thanks ahead of time
Your idea interset me cause when I was just a pup there was a falcon gasser here. IT was a 64, bright red, and had a screaming 460. It was bright red and ran all the trim. The only body mods was cut out rear wheel wells, and a hole in the hood with a finned cal-custom air scoop sticking out the hole. It also had Crager S/S wheels with Formula 1 Super stock tires. One sweet car and 1 of only 2 I can remember here I ever saw on the street around here. Can't wait to watch your progress!
I am not shying away from fomoco power just yet, but they cost soooo much damn money to make rip, a chevy is alot cheaper (budget friendly) and seems easier to make'm go like hell. I might decide to change it up though. I want to letter it appropriatly as well as use a color that was kind of whoa! back then. Hopefully it works out and I get it home soon.
Stick to Ford powered. I could see a 302 with the street boss modifications and some other work would pump out some serious power. It would be really cool if you took a 302, gave it 4v Cleveland 351 heads and give it a powerband in the 3,000-7,500 RPM range. Lighten up the rotating assembly so it revs really fast and that would sound so good.
When you open up the eng compartment to put the st axle, be sure to run a brace from the firewall to the ft of the frame rails. what ever eng you use go with a lot of gear and lots of converter. makes for real fun. I sold a 62 that I put a must 2 cross member in .once you get the fender wells out and shock towers there is tons of room for any eng combo. just don't run a glide.
how radical are you planning to build a motor....I just happen to have a 289 c4 combo....Pm me if interested...haha
It's really not that much more expensive. Hell, there's not that much difference from 289-5.0L, and you know 5.0 parts aren't expensive. Paint it a crazy flake yellow and letter it "Big Bird". Or "Flyin' High" or something like that. Tons of opportunity for bird references.
Someday I'd like to build a '57 Chevy 210 gasser and use a 440 Mopar for power....really BLOW people's minds!!! Put the SBC in the Falcon! Cool pic Kurt.
Not to mention that 'back in the day' they'd have been more likely to run a ford plant in a ford car AND the front-mounted dist on the sbf allows you to set the thing back more for better weight transfer. How cool would a wheelie be?
as promised I am going to keep this an updated build, I picked the car up on friday, pulled the rear end out about 2 hours ago (a hamber already came and took it!) and I am drawing up the rear suspension. Should be a roller by next weekend. Any ideas on lettering down the sides?
Its funny how the Ford vs Chevy cost debate gets brought up every time... Ford 302 Arent that exspensive to build now, you can thank the 5.0 mustang crowd for that, theres a shitload of parts out there now a days.
I still have the car, I was going to sell it but I have decided I will let it sit in the garage while I am out of town for a while on a project. I am going this weekend though to get my rear end and my spring over front end and 19" front wheels! It will be a while before she is done as I am only home on the weekends for the next year or so.
Here is a killer el cheapo SBF combo, but would take some looking to get the heads... 302 block - NOT a 5.0L roller motor, the blocks are weaker 302 crank 289 rods (they are a touch longer, and will put most cheapie flat top pistons (1.585ch) right about zero deck in an undecked block) 351 4brl heads - 1970 only with the 58.6cc chamber Some ugly nasty solid camshaft FPP or Boss 302 intake You end up with a 10.5:1 compression ratio with a common gasket, good quench, and its all super cheap parts. Balance it, and wing the snot out of it. 400hp is easy.
I been itchin for a Gasser style for a while ..... SO ...... Last weekend i bought out a buddy for a REEEEEL CLEEEN '54 Ford Main line 2dr Post car. Already have the frame cut off doing a Tube frame stub, Transverse Leaf & '60s Chrome Straight Axle, '57 Olds Rear end ... After she rolls again I will build up some mounts for..... YOU GUESSED IT ! DeSoto hemi & and A-833 4spd Still lookin for wheels & some stuff, But on its way !!!!!!!!!!!
that reminds me of the 57 chevy sleeper i saw @ carcraft in st paul ten years ago. 4dr with a 426 hemi and a 4spd
"BiRd BrAiN" "Bird Bath" (with a dirty bird bathing in a birdbath lettered "competition" political style cartoon) "Durty Burd" "Falc'n Drag" "BiRdDaWg" "Falconer" "Fly-n-High" I'd go with no name at all though, I just spent WAY TOO MUCH time on this...
Put a 351 windsor in it and tell everyone its a302 they'll never know the difference. You can build a 351 the same as you would a 350 chevy for about the same money. my 2 cents
According to Ford the 2 barrel Clevland heads are a better choice for a hi performance street motor. The Bigger valved 4 barrel heads were sold just to make the quota needed for them to be considered as a stock part for them to use in their racing programs. As for the Small Block Chevy WHY NOT? there were 2 early 60s Falcons gassers running around here in the mid 60s with SBCs and straight axles I had a 3rd that was begun by somebody else also set up for SBC.At the time these were on the street
You can buy a pair of big valve aluminum heads on e-Bay with hugh ports and screw in studs for $800. What is the reason for buying used heads you have to redo?
