So. Almost 2 years ago i rebuilt a 409 to put in my 62 Bel Air. 10 to 1 comp. A good blumpty blump Bullet cam and the new edelbrock single 4 barrel intake. When i put the intake on it said not to put a pcv in the hole in the rear of the intake. But made, what i THOUGHT, was a good baffle on the under side, and put a pcv valve in therr anyway. Well, i seem to slowly burning oil, and im thinking thats it. So my question is, do you guys think that just a breather on the fill tube in the front of the intake would be enough ventilation? I REALY dont want to drill holes in my valve covers!

the hole on the back of the intake is supposed to go to the road draft tube originally, the road draft tube and the front breather was enough from the factory. It is probably a bad idea to plug that rear opening if that is what you are thinking

I suppose you could set up a pcv system like the L79 327's had. where there is a non breather cap on the fill tube, a fitting on the side of the oil fill tube with a pcv valve in it and then a tube running from the hole in the rear of the intake to the bottom of the air cleaner for fresh air in. @DDDenny has good pics of the L79 system

if you do the L79 style PCV setup, you need a oil separator that is mounted in the valley as well.

that goes to the same hole as the draft/pcv tube to the base of the air cleaner

I do have a filler tube with a cap and a ****** for a hose that i could use. Couldi just run some type of breather on the rear intake hole and not make an oily mess

Run the PCV to your oil fill tube with a sealed cap then run a hose from the rear of the intake to the inside of your air breather. That is how it was done in 64 on the 409.

I actually forgot the W engines down draft tube mounted horizontally, but here's a little creativity that @dana barlow used on his Y-block for inspiration.

I might come up with some sort of breather for the rear. Maybe even a remote breather. I am also running a "fly eye" air filter and would rather not tie into that. But i like the idea!

Yes. My NEW edelbrock intake doesn't have the hole for the old road draft tube. It has a hole infront of the distributor. Edelbrock said to run a hose to the air cleaner. But being i didn't want to poke a hole in my air cleaner, and ive always ran a pcv in my cars. I thought i was smarter! Ha!

Sounds like your edelbrock intake doesn't have the stamped steel heat shield/labyrinth oil separator riveted or bolted to the bottom like the factory intakes do so as was suggested earlier find the L79 type oil fill tube with the PCV fitting and reverse the PCV flow direction make sure to get a correct oil fill tube though and don't fabricate one the correct oil fill tube has tongue shaped baffles angled downward in it so that it doesn't impede oil draining down it but stops oil drops from being flung up. Then fresh air supply goes into the hole in front of the distributor and crankcase vapors get pulled up the oil filler tube into the PCV fitting out the hose to the carb base.Guys have tried the L79 type system without the baffled oil fill tube and got the same results you did.

If you run the rear breather to a remote filter, it will need to be serviced to keep it clean.

If you have room between the hood and air cleaner, you could use a 1" spacer between the carb and air cleaner, drill and tap a hole in the spacer, install a ****** for a fresh air source, and run a hose from the intake to the spacer, and still run a PCV valve in the fill tube.
