Folks Of Interest We lost a crew chief recently.

Jett Townsend passed away after a long battle with heart failure. He was on several teams over the years. He started with my 64 injected Plymouth. He worked on my 65 Dodge altered wheelbase. He worked on the 65 Plymouth awb car Jake's Speedshop. He helped restore the Tom Catter 64 Mercury Comet. A original 1 of 19 427/4 speed cars. He also had a major roll in restoring the Doug's Headers flip top Corvair. A talented man that will be missed.
At Jetts request he made it known he wanted to be cremated with his ashes going into a parachute bag. I honored that request at the Out a site drags. His daughter helped pack the chutes. This was a emotional day for all. Im proud to have played a part in the memorial service. I can't think of a more meaningful thing I have done in a race car. RIP Jett.

 

He obviously was a talented guy. And he had good dog sense as well. Condolences to his family.

Its tough losing loved ones, my thoughts are with his friends & family.

 

A few more pics. Thanks everyone for the kind words. After 25 years or so your crew becomes family. A quick story to pass on about jetts character. I was driving the Jake's Speed shop car. It rolled the sprag causing the trans to literally explode. Pieces went through the dash and fenders. The shield was blown off. There was smoke everywhere. Thinking I was on fire or hurt just as I was popping the belts I felt two huge hands grab me and pull me out of the car. My feet didn't touch the ground. Everyone says they will be there for you but rarely are. When someone puts them selves in possible serious danger for you without regards to their own safety that changes a friendship. After the run I had a big fried chicken dinner with all the fixing. It gave us time to talk and tell stories about Jett. Most of the family was from out of state. Getting a good meal in before they hit the road was important for me. His widow insisted on paying for the dinner. I refused saying it was a gift from his friends. His daughter said she finally feels closure and can move on. I did my job.
