I want to add extra security to my 39 truck. I had the idea to add a locking mechanisim in the door pillar that would lock the doors seperate an independant from the factory latch. That way I dont have to run power to the door. This way I can use the doors normally and when I park it somewhere I can hit the fob and deadbolt the doors instead of going through the Henry locking routine.
Surely I am not the first to think of this?

Lots of ways to skin that cat, solenoids, links, and levers.

However, are you making life complicated for an unreasonable fear of the unknown? That isn't going to stop someone from stealing the truck or what's in it. Windows still get knocked out and make a large enough opening for someone to crawl through.

If someone wants it enough, they're gonna figure out a way to get it.:(:(

Its more the inconvenience of getting out the other side to lock the door that I find unreasonable and complicated.

I was thinking more of the ease and convenience of being able to lock it like a modern vehicle without having to modify all the door locking mechanisms and run power to the doors rather than trying to stop someone towing it away.

Should be easy enough to do with a couple of those deadbolt style suicide door latches. Somebody probably makes a power set, if not, a set of power door lock motors could be modified to work. I’d also make some kind of cable release as a backup if the batteries go dead or a lock motor dies. You could hide it between the cab and bed.

  6. I'm sure someone must have modified a stock (p***enger side) locking mechanism to the driver's side. Have you done a search?

Always consider how you would get in if your add-on fails, and if a thief can use the same process. Nothing will stop a determined thief, if they want it they will just pick an axle up and tow it. Fit a tracker.

Kinda like owning a jeep with a soft top. No realistic way to stop someone from getting in besides ****y traps and that’s ill advisable.

I've always had convertibles and open cars. I've NEVER locked one, ever. None were ever stolen, and I never had a top cut. Maybe I build something no one else wants?

If it's more for convenience, then why not add a 2nd keyed lock on the other side? I did this to my '39 Chev as it only had a p***enger side locking door handle. I just bought a 2nd p***enger side handle and had a key made so I can unlock both doors from the outside.

I guess Im in the minority, again. I think the idea has merit in some cases. My 56 dodge has typical early tech latches that open easily if not fully engaged, and crash damage always opens them. It also has the one side only lock thing going. So a dead bolt mounted in the cab seems fairly easy to do, not expensive and effective. I'd been considering bear claws, but now I'll consider the dead bolt also.

I searched for threads on adding a key to the drivers door on the fords but found none using an original style lock. The ones I found all were using a complete new locking system

When I owned my 1950s Holdens I never locked the doors because after installing new door gl*** in them I'd rather dead**** thieves would open the door, look inside, see there was nothing worth stealing and move on. Both vehicles had manual gears so they didn't know how to drive them.
On the early stuff, didn't the locking mechanism work on the shaft in the handle itself? A long time ago I did a repair on a locked door and the key and barrel deactivated the shaft itself. The mechanisms on both sides were the same, just the handles did the locking

If sliding out the p***enger side is too difficult, simply get out the drivers side, walk around the vehicle and get in the p***enger seat, lock the drivers door ( it is not a far reach) then get out and lock the p***enger door with the key... seems way easier than reinventing the wheel and putting a bunch of needless modern **** on your hot rod....

I like the idea as well. Reality is we can’t stop a real thief, but you can keep the honest people honest.
Has me thinking of a few proper ways to do it, I need to write it out and do some research. No use posting a partial idea.

I saw a guy put a flash-bang in his late Chev pickup. Same thief that had targeted it before looked inside again, there was another rolled up towel (concealing something desirable?)
Jerk thief kicked out drivers window, went in the cab headfirst, then you heard the BANG!
Thief came out of the truck like a flash...(with a Bang! LOL)
One of the cooler things I've seen...

@A****er Mike , issue is thieves have “rights” now, heck, more so than they did when I was young.

    Damned shame.
