I am stripping a 1962 327 in preparation for cleaning the oil galleys for a rebuild. I have taken out the front 3 expansion plugs, the 3 rear pipe plugs, the plug above the oil filter, and the hidden plug under the rear main. I have the front main galley and the oil pressure ports at the rear out of the block. I think that is all of the plugs, except there is one remaining plug in the driver's side head surface at the rear, just to the left of the oil pressure gauge port in the rear china wall. I'm pretty sure it is where they drilled the feed into the main galley. This plug is in the hole, what I would consider to be, backwards. At least I think it is an expansion plug. All you see is the bottom of the plug. I didn't know it was even possible to put a plug in backwards. I want to drill a hole and use my small slide hammer with a screw in the end to pull it out. I don't see any other way. Then clean everything and put a plug in there the right way. I think I am OK in doing that but want to make sure. It has been a couple of years since I did this, but it seems like the last couple I did, had a tapped hole and a pipe plug there? But that was race stuff, not stock stuff. I've searched but didn't come up with anything specific to this question. Any help would be appreciated.
Take the plug out and deal with replacing it on ***embly. You have removed all the soft plugs, correct? Even the one behind the cam shaft? When I am tanking a block I remove everything that can be removed.
If you are referring to plug on head surface it should be treaded , Possible that some one plug or bolt & cut flush , that removed allen pocket to install/ remove plug , Port there for machining oil p***ages
Yes, the cam bore plug has been removed. The only one left is that main galley feed plug. Cam bearings are out. There is nothing else left in the block.
Yes this block has a fresh deck job, but it doesn't appear that the mill ever touched this plug. It doesn't appear to be cut off because it is a few thousandths below the deck and little rough, so I don't think the decking process touched it. It is just a flat surface showing. If I can't get this plug out, I can't clean that p***age. Any suggestions?
You done good. When you get to that point if you can't find a soft plug to fit turn the block upside down and run a pipe tape in it. Put gun grease in the flutes to help catch the chips.
That could very well be. There is no way to knock that plug in or out from the back side. It could only be put in from the outside. There is no means of getting ahold of it to turn it in or out if threaded. It about has to be a driven in plug with no means of driving it out. If it is a solid plug I could probably drill and tap it to pull with a slide hammer. Oil doesn't actually flow through the last couple inches to the deck surface. but it does flow by that las 2 inches.
If you want to take plug out , If drill start 1/8 -1/4 ( sneak up on size ) if threaded easy out it , if solid same thing drill then tap , if not pipe , Red lock tight set screw / plug. I worked on a engine one time from Machine Shop, heads installed , plug missing , Leaking oil from that Port, R& R head to install, Half exposed half covered
Pre-1969-1970 engines are typically like this, a solid pressed in slug about 5/8" long.. Only way to remove is drill and tap for a slide hammer puller. Replacements are available, check Dorman....or the hole can be tapped for a pipe plug.
Hey Thanks Ericnova72. I have all the rest of the p***ages squeaky clean now. Been working on it for several hours. I guess I will break out the drill and taps. I hate to leave that little bit of p***age uncleaned. There could be a motor killer lurking in there. I have a little 3 lb. slide hammer. Will that get it out of there? Maybe drill and tap for 5/16-18?
The less plug material left the easier it should be to remove . Instead of the slide hammer. I 'd recommend a" puller" solution.
Got it!. Drilled 5/16". Tapped 3/8". Made a 3/8"-16 bolt attachment for my 3# slide hammer and pulled it right out. Now I can clean the hell out of it. The hole measures .508" with my calipers. Will a 1/2" expansion plug work there, or do I need to tap for a 3/8" pipe plug?
The 327 I just put together didn't have a plug in the hole, I used the expansion plug that came in the plug kit, it doesn't leak. I did put plenty of permatex aviation sealer in the hole before installing the plug. you can tap it if you want, you'll get a more permanent fix, I expect...as long as you tap it well.
