They'd be right at home on a Chevette.

  3. I would certainly trust them more than Cokers!

There are a few engineers in my family and I'm used to dealing with them. They're not all the same, but they are generally pretty smart and oddly curious.

I'd say the shallow tread depth is a drawback, at 5/32 it's half of a normal new tire and only a couple thirty seconds from being "too shallow". I have a V8 sedan that isn't exactly light that I've used one on the right front a couple of times. Even though I intended to drive slowly, like the Nissan P/U driver I ended up going way over the speed rating. Gotta think the front end of my sedan was much heavier than the nose of your Shivvy.

Running these bad boys is to me kind of like using tires past their expiration dates - some do, some never would. I think the engineers have built in much more margin of safety than is disclosed and the lawyers have made serious noise about the times something goes wrong.

Have you seen the rechargeable battery fires and explosions thread? Make you look at your rechargeable differently.

Now i have to go out and look at the 39 year old skinny spare that I have kept around for my 48.
It came out of one of the 84 Olds 88 sedans that my dad had and I carried it in the bed of the 48 for a long time. It did get me to the gas station a few times but I sure wasn't going to run down the road at highway speeds for a serious number of miles. Last time I checked on a new tire for that wheel I thought that it was priced under the "damn, that is a lot of money" pricing. This time around I plan to mount it behind the seat in the cab with a cover over it. Agreed that they would make real nice rollers for a project, 4 of them wouldn't take a lot of space in those bring your own rollers deals either. upload_2023-7-7_21-46-19.png

if the tire looks pretty normal on a stock rim... I think it would be fine at reasonable speeds.

Having done plenty of pretty sketchy stuff over the years and lived to tell the tale, I can't believe anyone would seriously consider using them. They're designed, engineered, and manufactured for TEMPORARY use. It says so in big, BLOCK LETTERS RIGHT ON THE SIDEWALL.

After all of these opinions, let me add, have you checked on any motorcycle tires ?

They're terrific for use while building/modifying a hot rod or race car. I've wondered thru the years why so many guys buy a whole set of new wheels and tires as one of the first things they've purchased for their new project -- working around them while fabricating and painting and finishing years later doesn't make sense to me.

I don't think tires have expiration dates. They have manufacturing dates on them, and then it is a matter of debate and much argument about when to no longer use them on the highway.

Sorry in advance if this now turns into a tire lifespan thread.

    erm its the ply count
hold a space saver tyre in one hand and a van tyre in the other
the van tyre is 3 times heavier.

oh and its 2014 when the auto manufacturers installed tire pressure monitoring in modern vehicles, now what is most disconcerting is.......
post 2014 cars come with a can of squeezy cheese as the spare
so you say to yourself, I am a saine person and I want to fit a full size wheel and tyre in my car
now, tyre pressure monitor doofers mount onto the valve stem
they have a unique valve stem to hold the pressure monitor
the cars ecu is only looking for 4 signals,
you can set the sensitivity of the warning light coming on or off.
or, if you have 30 psi in all 4 tyres and you have the pressure sensors set for high or you have told the car you have inflated your tyres to 36 psi
the light will come on, scroll through the settings in the menu for low, it goes out
it goes out after a few miles, it is not instant.

so, yes you can have a full sized spare from a 2013 model in the boot that is the exact same wheel and tyre, but sans sensor
when you fit it the light will come on.
    end

oh and in the Europe, now you cannot fit the car tyres to light duty vans, they have to have the C for commercial designation

the germans wont even let you run a differing offset wheel
993 porker 16'' 2 bit wheels, they fit the cup 2's from a 996 and its all messy

talking of them porkers, what about the old pork spare space savers that you inflated - they were folded up on them selves, anyway, you couldn't then put the punctured wheel back under the forward bonnet or hood so had to put it on the back seat, which is nice
