Last year he was saying that he was only crushing 72 and later, but it looks like that’s changing. There’s a OT 4x4 Ford chassis I better get while the getting is good. Most of his square body Chebby stuff is gone.

PM sent, but I feel like I’m kissing and telling, LOL. I miss having Missoula Auto Salvage, the place in Crackerville near Anaconda (S&S?) and the place in Whitehall around. They all had the X frame Chevy stuff I like. I should have bought a bunch of 63 AC stuff and a whole 64 2dr Impala from the Crackerville place. He only wanted a grand. That was maybe 8 or so years ago when he crushed out.

Dammit...both of those pancaked Buicks have a 430 or a 455, hopefully had. Makes me wanna cry. This crushing frenzy as of late isn't just up in MT it's here in CO too. If you watch Roadkill, this is the same yard where they got the Disgustang. Putting the last of their old stuff out there too....got a bunch of stuff off of these. Never enough though.

Oh man, that 63 and 60 look pretty picked over, but I bet there’s still goodies there. I’d love to dig around in the 60 especially. It’s wild that the taillights and cove panels are still there.

Appears the dash is still in that '60 as well, at least the sheetmetal part of it is. That'd be worth cutting out, and whatever trim parts are left, even if they're dinged up. Glad someone is saving something off of them before they're gone, that '60 would be worth picking clean if the price is right.

Nothing too exciting…. I’m trying to make accessory brackets line up. You’d think that everything would want to behave since most of it was off the same car, but nope. EC657F57-022F-4454-A050-0970C8048601.jpeg

I’m still running wild with the green tape.

    6B56E678-073C-4877-8251-A29C4968302D.jpeg

The cheapy Jegs Airgap has the boss for the top alternator bracket too high. I’ve got the style that bolts to the thermostat housing too, and that’s even worse.

    1E6284AD-C0CB-4EC1-B537-7623C879E41E.jpeg

At least the fan and WP pulley fit.

    35A7540A-C505-41E4-8AB3-3DCFD583E33C.jpeg

The new water pump and the one that came with my block both have a threaded hole where this power steering bracket bolts to it. The car I took it off of was a through hole with a nut on the back of the bracket. I’ll drill it out if I decide to use this setup. The bracket is also hitting one of my timing cover bolts.

    E25138AD-269C-4A55-9649-EACAB94CF02A.png

I left this bracket on the donor car exhaust manifold hoping the holes in the end of my rams horn would line up. They don’t, but making a plate with 3 holes in it will be easy.

    71B77825-FDB8-45FF-A598-45CEFBD427D4.jpeg

The new Carter fuel pump I bought’s inlet is facing a stupid direction. Noting I can’t deal with but it seems goofy.

My lighting is now lousy because I decided to plug an angle grinder into my LED 4’ fluorescent rather than pull an extension cord. That didn’t work out.

I’ve got an alternator in the mail. Once it’s here I’ll either cut up the top mount or chase up a different style. I’ve got decisions to make about the PS pump mount too. I still need to finish up the HEI.

Morning break time score. I got 3 standards on one reverse. I’ll get 4 of something one of these days. They look like they’re probably 14x6. I’ll clean em up later and see if they’re passable.

After a little cleanup, they’re far from perfect but probably good enough. (3) 14x5s and a reverse 14x6. I need to come up with 4 of something!

    Wide whites or pinners?

Nice score any chromes are good chromes. Pinners or blackwall. Wide whites are no go they're so over used these days and never correctly. @Moriarity is the only one who uses wide whites in the correct context. Well, he and maybe a couple others...

What about putting the bracket on the bottom of the boss and thru bolting it for the alt?

It’s going to be low so it needs whitewalls. Pinners are an order of magnitude cheaper than wide whites anyway. I’m pretty excited about these even if 3 of them are only 5”.

I tried underneath. The bracket looks like it wants to be in the middle of the boss. My alternator should turn up today or tomorrow and I’ll double check. If I can’t get it to work, I’ll get one of these:

I’m pretty excited about the chrome wheels and skinny whites.

Anyone got one 14x5 or (especially) 3 14x6 reverse OEM style in old chrome they don’t want an arm and a leg for? I know I can get new ones, but if I’m spending a grand on wheels I’ll get Supremes.

I’m out shaking every chrome wheel bush I can find and I’m up to 8. More 14x6, need to check the offsets and see where we’re at. Here they are after a really basic clean up with barkeeper’s friend. I haven’t busted out the Coke, ketchup, aluminum foil, 0000, or wood bleach yet. 4F7A0C5B-116B-4F54-81FA-D3846D41B3BA.jpeg

They’re still pretty grubby and the rust might be too awful on a couple.

Hey Luke , we always used to cut down the factory alt bracket to the same basic shape as that aftermarket one, always worked fine.

Thanks for the tip Colin. I was looking at it this morning wondering how one would hold up if I cut it down. Sound like it will!

  21. I have 2 14x6 or 7 with a pretty deep dish. They are rusty, but you can have them if you come this way. Will try to get some pics tomorrow

Those look just as “good” as the rest of the ones I’ve been dragging home. I’ll take ‘em. Up past Bigfork isn’t too bad either. I was worried you were going to be somewhere remote like Libby or something. We’ve been talking about doing an afternoon some weekend on Flathead anyway. If that doesn’t work, I’ll run up some night after work. Either way, it’s an excuse to stop in in Richwine’s in Polson. I gotta get a couple Bernie Burgers every summer. I’ll be in touch soon. Thanks!

  27. What's remote about Libby? I've been there and I'm just 1700 miles down US-2. Haha.

60’s can run wide whites and be correct but they need to be 2 1/4” whites, 61 is the last year that wide whites were available from the factory, here’s a picture of my Impala, it would be so wrong with anything but wide whites

Oh man, now I've messed around and fired up the pro-Libby contingent. (there is supposed to be a good car show up there every year)

I never get tired of looking at your '61. That's a strong argument for wide whites. I like this '60 Elco too: (no idea who's it is, would like more pics)

    mitch_070.JPG

And an argument for skinny whites from our good friends at Revell:

I trimmed my alternator bracket. It still needs a repaint, but I might whittle a little more off it before I do.

    415ED98E-466A-4BDC-8501-ACCC07F880F4.jpeg

My distributor has an extra harness coming out for some 305 80s truck external timing module. The last guy had already jumpered it but all that extra crap is ugly, and I’m already not smitten with that big HEI.

    82BCEF6C-BD95-428A-8392-E81A9DC94855.jpeg

I tore it down and cleaned and lubed everything. The mechanical advance was very sticky but it improved.

    A540F582-9AA4-4074-A3E7-B7AE16DE5407.jpeg

The pick up connector has an extra pin compared to a 4 pin model. YouTube came through and I swapped the position of the green and basically bypassed all the extra external stuff. I broke off the extra males and plugged it in.

    221D3C85-0F3C-4FEF-8FAE-CE81AB4FBC0E.jpeg

I know tuning mechanical advance is a whole science. I don’t have access to a distributor machine. Here’s my existing weight and spring combo. Should I fool with it at this point, or get it up and running and then tune? I guess I’m asking if there’s a baseline setup I should consider now?

    69E51BE5-948F-4A10-B4A6-1851E57182B4.jpeg

I hooked a battery and a janky little test light to it and got a blinky light, so it works.

    534CFF4F-2F39-4061-B684-E918A0E9ED7C.jpeg

Look at all this crap I got rid of. I still need to fill the hole in the housing.

    426254D2-18E7-4806-AC63-1E5C683C2E4C.jpeg

I got a gear in the mail from Lloyd, so that’s squared away. Thanks man!

More wiring, PS stuff, and carb are probably next. I’m also probably going to switch back to metal work soon. I wanna get a bunch of stuff in epoxy primer before winter.
