Woah! Sweet!

 

Ooooh - this is stunning James! Something to aspire to, for sure!

But now my car looks all squat, dumpy and tall! (and probably a couple more of the 7 dwarfs too, if I could remember them!)

 

A man with your welding skills could knock that out in a weekend, I feel sure.

 

So, it’s been a while!

But I’ve been making slow progress on this in the background. In fact, today I finally got over to my local mechanic for a health check - ready for the show season! We are good to go!

I’ve given the carb a light freshen up, sorted out a couple of welding jobs, sorted the timing and gave the ol’ girl a new pair of peepers.

she’s still not running quite right, with a hesitation /hunting when cruising at part throttle… so any ideas on that would be gratefully received!

Your hesitation and "hunting" at cruise is likely a lean issue. I don't recognize your carb, was expecting a pair of SU's. Make sure your main circuit and accelerator circuits are clear, and that the float is set to the proper level. When all else fails and parts are not available, I have used a tiny set of drills designed for cleaning oxyacetylene torches to add a touch of fuel.

4 Pedals - Its a Zenith WIA-2 carb - a version of them were pretty common on land rovers and some other british cars sold on these shores at the time.

'Lean' sounds like a real possibility - there is a tiny amount of play in the throttle shaft - which I guess is leaking in air, and I've not checked the float level - but I'll do that next!

I would look for a vacuum leak.

 

id say vacuum leak.if there is a leak on the throttle shaft itl never run right.id try a replacement weber carb,not the racing item stock replacement.i put one one a scirocco way back.made more power ran faultless and did 10 plus mpg.also fitted the correct plugs it was a new car.
try turning out the mixture screw out 1/8 turn.looking good

 

Hello! Just found this thread. I have started at the beginning and read right through. The welding and fabrication is a fantastic journey. You really upped the skill level with those repairs. It's great to now see it out and about. I'm cludging my way through some structural repairs on my 100E so the early stages of this project really struck a chord with me.

Your dedication and results are admirable!! Car reminds me of the old Mooneyes Toyota, so four doors are GOOD! Is Humber related to Vauxhall or Opel? See many similarities.....

 

Vauxhall and Opel are GM. Humber was part of the Rootes Group, later taken over by Chrysler.

 

Humber, Hillman, Karrier, Singer, Sunbeam, Talbot and Commer........Rootes Group.

I forgot to ask where are you getting the patch panels from and do they sell Husky panels?. I need to start getting bookmarks for parts for the future builds.

You could try Northampton Motorsport - Steve Wooding there is their carb wizard - has sorted out all mine over the years. Not saying he's the definitive man but he may well be able to help you - or suggest a replacement. Southern Carbs a re good too.

Most of the body panels are by a place called Ex-pressed Steel, they’re based here in the UK - I don’t know if they do Husky panels, but it’s worth getting in touch.

 

Thanks Jon, I seem to have sorted it by pulling everything apart and putting it back together again. It’s still coughs a little on overrun, but the issues I was having before seem to have been resolved.

I might just price up a replacement, though - appreciate the lead on Southern Carbs.

I don’t think I’ll be at the ‘nats this year I’m afraid. Just keeping things local for the time-being.

 

So I’ve been getting the ol’ girl out and about as much as I can to build up some confidence. Since the last update I’ve added a few bits and pieces including seatbelts, some gauges and a bunch of Amazon sound deadening. I’ve also painted the roof in epoxy primer, so I’ve got a blank canvas to play with…

We have good days and bad days, but I’m enjoying getting re-acquainted with driving a column-change manual again. It’s very rewarding when you string a few good changes together out on the country lanes!

 

Never knew they existed until a minute or two ago, but now I really want a Karrier Gamecock van.

The car is looking good, great to see it getting some miles on it. (Or kilometers, if you prefer!)

 

Super nice ride, those were great looking cars IMO. I fixed the steering wheel thing for ya...
