History Australian Street Rodding Magazine to close after # 400

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by andydodge, Jul 16, 2023.

  1. Australian Street Rodding magazine is to be closed down after issue # 400. Mary O'Toole, widow of the publisher/owner Larry O'Toole has announced that the magazine will cease publication at issue # 400 which will be the October 2023 issue.
The magazine is published by Graffiti Publications and Larry & Mary's son, Al O'Toole has been the editor for a number of years.
Larry passed away last year after a short illness.

    Sorry to learn that.
No experience myself, but the sport keeps getting wounds that need to be healed.
The action from your continent is remarkable.
Always enjoy the approaches taken by the rodding population there.

  3. I am a fan of Australian magazines. I have quite a few of them, and they were always interesting to read. Graffiti Publications put out good quality magazines. It is too bad to see them shut down. Could anyone possibly pick up where the left off. It is a shame when any automotive publication is no more.

Bummer. Super hard for magazines to survive, even if there are a lot more rods on the road in Aus.

Ol Skool Rodz have gone and last year sometime Hot Rod Deluxe went. I have heard that printing costs - like everything else have soared. I hate to say it but with so much online today rodders are going there. Like a book I prefer to hold something in my hands rather than a tablet.

WRONG! OL'SKOOL RODZ has not gone, just got the latest issue. They are now subscription only. Last issue of Hot Rod Deluxe was January 2020.

Sorry to hear it, I like looking at the stuff from your side of the world. The largest paper in our area and the one in our small town have both gone digital this last year. It may be the way it is; I don't have to like it.:(

I have the first 300. Good magazine. I knew Larry, Colin and Geoff when they first started out. Some of my junk has made the pages. Sorry to see it end.

I am sorry to hear that, but in many ways it’s not surprising, Larry, was the magazine. Print media is becoming a relic thanks to social media. The future of hot rod magazines are going to be niche magazines like Ol School Rods, that specialise in a particular aspect of rodding and showcase arts based articles focussing on pin striping, illustrators beyond the cars and motorcycles.

Sad to see but as others said, the cost of print media is too high for many publications.

  13. Not that she has to give a reason but it seems that Mary O'Toole has just decided to stop publication..........a real shame..........and I miss Hot Rod Deluxe, Rod & Custom, Rodders Digest & Elapsed Times........to name a few....lol.

It is sad to see it go. Have had a feature & a story in there many years ago.

Oz’s auto scene is taking a bad beating. Holden going down, Valiant and Ford leaving and now Street Rodder magazine is going away. That is really sad.
I have one issue of Street Rodder magazine which I bought at a news stand while I was in Brisbane . It has the outrageous flamed 64 Mustang on the cover. It was a great magazine no doubt.

Sad News that Mary will close the magazine, it is a BIG job to complete each issue
Larry did a feature on my coupe a few years ago and I have the magazine in a special place in my library

Sadly, print is dting and publishing is expensive, I would think the magazine was Larry's dream and his wife just don't have the passion to continue, I'm afraid the magazine like many titles that have gone belly up here in the States.

I remember a time when there were numerations magazines dedicated to the hot rod world, times change. HRP
