I have a pre 67 C6 behind an FE, transmission works perfect when you put the shifter in drive and go, the problem comes in when you down shift to low, it will go back up to second, then its like its against a brick wall, will not under any force go into third. I ruined a B&M shift cable trying to push it into gear, only thing that will get it to shift, is to shut the engine off, then it shifts normal. I've replaced the valve body and the gov. no change. Could the servo be doing this? Thanks
What shift quadrant does this have? Is it a white dot, green dot, L or a D,2,1 setup? Also, is this happening setting still and shifting to low or moving. If moving, how fast are you attempting the downshift. Is it a stock valve body?
D,2,1 Lets see if I can explain a bit better. Start the engine, put shifter in 1st, take off down the road, shift into 2nd, still going well, then TRYING to shift into Drive it will not move, stays in second. It will also do this sitting still. We had the truck up on jack stands and took the shifter cable off and while my buddy was inside, I crawled under and tried to shift it at the transmission with a cheater bar, still would not shift into drive.
Yes... It's weird because I've had guys with 30-40 years working on transmissions just shake their heads,
Does it shift okay 1,2,D with the engine not running? If it does, it makes me think you have some type of hydraulic problem. The lands on the manual valve are all the same size so there shouldn't be any problem moving it. However, there obviously is. Has the valve body been modified in any fashion such as a shift kit? When it hangs in second, can you do a manual shift back to low? I'm looking at a hydraulic schematic for your transmission. The only difference I see between automatic second and manual second is that there is no mainline oil supply to the 2-3 shift valve. You also split the 1-2 shift valve locking it in second gear. Neither of these differences should have any effect on the ability to move the manual valve.
I have two different valve bodys, one has a shift kit the other is stock, it doesn't matter which, the end results are the same. Yes it will shift back to low. Thanks
I think you said at the beginning if you start the car and put it in drive it will go thru all 3 gears… is that right? But if you start in 1 and shift it manually to 2 you cannot move the lever to the 3 or drive position. Also you said if up on jack stands with no shift cable connected you cannot go past 2 starting in 1….because the lever will not move to 3….. but will it go back to 1? Sounds like a link inside or a detent not allowing the lever to move because it works fine in 3 or drive…
Try doing this (engine not running) multiple times and see if you can get it to hang up. That would point to something mechanical since I can't find anything hydraulic that could cause the problem. Could the nut that holds the linkage inside the transmission be lose? Could the park pawl rod be interfering with linkage movement? Does the downshift lever move freely? You might drop the valve body and check for play or bent parts in the internal levers. Take a good look at the detent comb that the detent spring rides on.
Is it a early or late trans? Detent in the valve body or spring steal comb outside? This is a real head scratcher for sure.
Never had one not shift to high manual , I have had them take off in 2nd and not low because of the type of trans it is . Ford did some weird stuff , when improving the auto trans
The earlier quadrant where DR had a white dot and a green dot and then L, when you selected the white dot the transmission started in 2nd and shifted to high. In green dot you had all three gears. Some quadrants had a D2 and a D1 for white dot, green dot.
Green dot Cruise-O is way different than a C6…in cast iron too. It was sold as “Select Shift” and could start out in 2nd which was a function/option Ford liked for traction. The C6 started in 1966 and stayed around until 1996. I believe it replaced the MX
