VINTAGE SHOTS FROM DAYS GONE BY! (Part 2)

Discussion in 'The Antiquated' started by Ryan, Jun 17, 2019.

  1. That looks like the famous "Horseshoe-Hairpin Turn" on US Rt 50 in Preston County West Virginia. The common phrase was, "You could read your own license plate # going around it". It has now been widened, because as trucks got longer and carried more weight, they were constantly getting suck. They couldn't turn sharp enough.

    Hello,

When we were little, we were invited by our friends to spend those hot days of summer swimming in the huge U.S. Navy Base on Terminal Island. Our friend’s dad was a Navy guy and got us through the main gate for the times we visited the base. Our own family had driven by the base a million times on our way to Terminal Island housing and working areas, but we never stopped at the base for any reason.

So, after spending time around the pool, we were on a little excursion to the base exchange store. Another word for low cost supplies for Naval personnel. It was a nice store and the cost of items was definitely less than the local community neighborhood stores. Part of the benefits of being associated with the armed forces or in this case, Navy personnel.

Our elementary school and junior high school friends who lived in the official, Naval Housing near our houses also mentioned going shopping at the Naval Exchange, and not the local grocery store where we all shopped for weekly items. Their housing was in a specific area, but walking distance to our homes and schools. The Navy base was a few miles toward the ocean and harbor places.

I was amazed that the cost of “stuff” was so low. Our friend did buy some stuff with the family I.D. card and that was a benefit for military families. YRMV

If I'm not mistaken that's the Newfoundland airport where planes that were still in the air during the 9/11 attack were sent.

That AC unit looks like a D-3 crawler… and that lady looks just like my grandmother.
