So in the next couple of months, the H.A.M.B. is going to see some changes. In fact, we are adding the single largest feature we have ever added in our eleven years doing this stuff...

However, one of the things we have to do to add this mystery feature is to increase the screen realestate we use. Currently, we are optimized for screens that have a resolution of 800 x 600. We've been this way since 1995 mostly because our traffic reports have always stated that over 30% of our traffic uses monitors with that resolution.

Through the years, that number has gotten smaller and now our reports say that only 16% of our traffic has a resolution of under 1024x768. So, we are seriously considering using that extra realestate to our advantage.

Right now, a bunch of you guys are going, huh???? What??? What the **** is Ryan spewing out of his mouth? Read on.

Click on the thumbnail below of the orange line with aarows on each end. If you can see the entire line on your screen without scrolling from left to right, you have a resolution of over 800x600. If you have to scroll, you are more than likely using a monitor with the resolution set to 800x600.

What does this mean to you? If you have to scroll to see the line, you will have to scroll to see the entire width of the new HAMB. Speak up now.

If you don't have to scroll to see the whole line, you are money and I love you.

EDIT: I am having second thoughts about this one... I think 16 to 17% of our traffic is too much to alienate... Might wait another year before we widen!

Kiwi Kev, not necessarily... If you are on a windows machine, right click on your desktop and choose "properties."

    Choose the "settings" tab.

See the little "screen resolution" setting? It most likely reads "800 x 600". See if you can change that to 1024 x 768.

I use 800x600 on a dinosaur G4 OS 9. something dial-up as you probably already know.
In order to see the line without scrolling I have to go to 1024x768 and then the words in my address bar are smaller than the fine print on a used car contract.

Go ahead and do it, I should spend the time in the garage anyway...

Currently, I'm wavering... I would really like to expand the design, but not if it effects too many folks...

any of you that need to scroll aren't necessarily out of luck.
When you reset your screen resolution to 1024x768 or higher, there are options, at least in windows, to increase the text size so you can still read it.

You can right click your desktop and choose "appearance", and each box that you can see in your screen you are able to modify the properties for- color, font size, etc.

In Windows Explorer, you can also choose the option "view" and "text size" and choose larger fonts. Sure there's the same options in Macintosh, heck, if need be choose "settings: control panel" and access the "accesibility" functions, for the reading impaired and it has high contrast and VERY large font sizes :D

Kiwi Kev, just minimize your open programs by clicking on the "_" ****on in the upper right hand corner of your screen. Then click the right hand mouse ****on and click on Properties. This will bring up a box with a picture of a computer screen and go and click on the Settings tab. When that opens you will see in the lower right hand a slider that says Screen Area. Just move the little toggle until you get 1024x768 showing underneath. If you have any other questions, we will try and get you through it.

I say trust your numbers. The traffic reports indicate that a minority of people will have to scroll. Out of that 16%, I'd venture to say that maybe a third of them can adjust their resolution settings. So that would leave approximately 1 in 10 HAMBers with the scroll issue, some of whom may not even care. And if they do have a problem with it, I'm guessing they'll live.

    Do it.

  28. I've noticed that on a few threads, it's very annoying!
