Hi gears are usually thicker. No need for a ring gear spacer if you use a 3 series carrier.

The pinion tooth was laying in the bottom of the housing...lots of gunk on top of it, been there quite a while.

Also found the cracks on the rest of the teeth. I've seen this type of crack on several Chevy rears from the 60s.

I'd have to say your inspection went really well. Beats the hell out of sitting on the side of the road 100 miles from home calling 1-800-TOW-TRUK.

That's great! Every time I head off on a road trip, I go ahead and hook up my trailer to my 1 ton for my wife in case I need her to come get me. She is willing, but I have been fortunate enough to be able to deal with issues on the road and not needed her to come save me yet...

Once my wife was with me when something broke, I got a friend to fetch our truck and trailer :)

looks like the same one that Johhny Gee linked above, and yeah, it would probably work.

I was thinking about putting together another 3rd member to "go fast"...with posi and 3.70 or so gears.

Doesn't take too long to change the whole thing

Going back over your words does leave it open to wanting two 3rd members.

I had bought some long studs to put in the axles and front hubs, just to make sure the shank lug nuts are legal if I go drag racing. I put them in the axles today...pressed out the old ones, set the axle in the mill, drilled the hole out to tap size, then used a transfer punch in the chuck to center the top of the tap and cut the threads by hand.

The new gears arrived today, so I installed them, along with new bearings. It went together pretty easily, the first pinion shim I tried gave a decent contact pattern. New wheel bearings are in, too.

It's quieter...no weird noises from the driveline or wheels. It's starting to rain, no top or wipers yet, so I'll go for a longer test drive in the morning.

Just curious Jim...when you install those longer screw-in wheel studs, do you Loc***e them in or anything? The last set I installed, I tacked them to keep them from ever backing out, but not sure if that is really necessary.
